I just go into placement matches with the goal of finishing as quickly as possible, accepting whatever shit initial score. Then I focus on quickly going up the ranks afterward.

I lucked out in my placement matches, got gold after my first ten because I had 20+ kill streaks with D Va. Also I stay on the payload.
I would love to get under the hood of how they determine rankings after placement. I played 9/10 of them with one of my friends, and in the one I didn't play with him I lost and he won and I still was ranked ~200SR above him
It depends partially where he ended last season, especially depending on how many they played (I think), plus individual performances. You just did better than him. Simple as that, really.
