My top tier is Happiness, Spiritual Machines, and Naveed, with Clumsy and Gravity a close second tier. I might throw Curve in that second tier too.
Gravity single handedly made me stop paying attention to the band right after 2 fantastic records. Maybe I'm remembering it too harshly, but some of the singles were fairly cringe and production was really bad. May have to give it at least a skim on Spotify, though.
Seems like there are some pretty strong opinions about Curve here. Sounds like I need to give that one another spin and see!
it's not as successful as being amazing alt-art-rock as happiness or spiritual machines but it really goes for it and comes close. it's easily their most atmospheric record, and that alone makes me love it
If I have to pick a least favorite OLP album it’s probably Burn Burn. It’s interesting cuz that’s when they went independent but it feels like their radio rock sound at its blandest to me. Like it’s a follow up on their Gravity and Healthy sound without the hooks or moments from either that genuinely move me
Man haven’t listened to these guys in so long. But I remember feeling the same way about Gravity. After that album they fell out of my rotation.
I love most of Gravity. Especially Bring Back the Sun, Sell My Soul, A Story About A Girl, and Do You Like it.
Gravity is... fine. If I was a fan of the band when it came out I probably would have been angry about it but as it is, to me it’s a pretty decent standard rock album. I’ve really come around on Bring Back the Sun lately
I have been fan since Clumsy was released in 1997 when I was 11 and had just finished 9th grade when Gravity was released. It leaked a week before hand (although I think Not Enough and Sell My Soul were swapped haha) and overall I liked it right off the bat, and bought the CD the day it was released. 18 years later I still like a handful of tracks a lot and other ones are decent but only really listen to them when running through the album as a whole.
The one song they shared from Spiritual Machines II before the technical issues sounded awesome. Some of the best material I've heard from them since the first Spiritual Machines album 20 years ago. Can't wait to hear the full record! Also looking forward to the rest of the performance when it's available. They only got through Right Behind You and part of In Repair.
Watched the "live"stream (they ended up doing the whole thing yesterday morning and recorded it haha) and the clips they shared from Spirtual Machines II sounded great. This could be their best album since the first Spiritual Machines. Ray Kurzweil and artist Oli Goldsmith are all involved again and Dave Sitek of TV On The Radio is producing.
What they shared of the new one sounds like an eclectic blend of the first one and their newer sound.
