I watched 5/10 best picture nominees and Anora wasn’t one of them. Looks like I’m watching it tomorrow. I don’t want to wait til it’s on Hulu, so I’ll rent it. They’re all very different from each other and they were all good, but my ranking out of pure enjoyment… The Substance Wicked Dune 2 A Complete Unknown Conclave
We also got films from each of the Safdie bros. Aronofsky and Yorgos joints. A big budget MJ biopic from Antoine Fuqua. Plus Avatar 3 from Jimmy Cam. Wicked Part II.
I am happy Mikey won! I feel like some people in general were riding hard on the “this is probably Demi’s last chance to contend for an Oscar” and also the narrative that it was “her time” as an underdog (which I feel was first perpetuated by Demi herself)…and like, that shouldn’t factor in to whether someone wins or not (although it does sometimes like I said previously with Leo), Mikey gave the better performance of the year (IMHO) even if this was Demi’s best performance of her career.
I don’t know why I looked at the comments of entertainment weekly’s post of winners and I saw one comment that said “no one has ever heard of Anora, Elon musk must have funded the Oscar campaign” and another that called the film Russian propaganda.
Why even have supporting acting characters when the two winners are leads or co-leads in the films they won for?
It's stupid and insulting to people doing smaller roles. If you asked 100 people walking out of a theater, the vast majority would call those two lead roles.
It's crazy because not only was Emilia Perez a dogshit movie, Saldana was dogshit in it as well. It's not even like "well she was the bright spot in an otherwise bad movie." She was bad in the bad movie. Everyone was bad in that movie.
Having a criteria that tries to define the difference between lead and support creates more problems than it solves, it's just a category to give 2 more actors awards. With it how it is now movies without a hetero lead couple have a work around.
Anyway it's cool that the Best Director/BP winner is a trash cinema fan. Gotta be the only Academy Award winner to have seen The Suckling and Night Train to Terror, right?
Criteria would be problematic; a character can be present throughout a movie and do little, while someone can be in less and be the driving force of the movie. It comes down to judgment, and it would be better for the Academy to determine a slot rather than a studio trying to run the numbers and pick a less competitive slot.
No, my aunt died between me watching Part 1 and Part 2 so I was out at my family's house on Saturday and came back too late to finish
It probably will take a few years to say for sure, but Anora will probably fit with No Country for Old Men, Moonlight, and Parasite as far as great films that have won. Hopefully they don't start waving Disney money in Baker's face; the post careers of young filmmakers winning is not great.
