This has been my favorite batch of best picture nominees in a while. Usually there's at least 1-2 or more that just bore me to tears or feel like generic Oscar bait, but this year, even my least favorite of the bunch (Emilia Perez) was batshit crazy and easily held my attention. I think I'm probably partial to The Substance overall, but I really loved Anora, The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, and Dune Part 2. Oh, and, I'd put Flow right up there with those, too, though it's only nominated for animation. Bummed I didn't get to the shorts this year, though.
I just heard The Big Picture pod pitch the idea that the Academy needs to remove shorts from the telecast entirely and just give them their own separate ceremony. NGL I don't disagree.
No one watches them but the point of giving short films an Oscar and nominations is so that the creators can put it on their resume to get their next project funded. If you cut them from the Oscars that wont happen.
You got it. I'm sure the Bob Dylan movie is fine but I feel like it has a low ceiling. Biopic and biopic adjacent don't usually resonate with me unless it's a legit all-timer
