wonder what the high number of abstains does to No Other Land's chances. i need to see it win (and consequently see Gal Gadot upset)
Honestly if No Other Land wins the Oscar.. I hope the camera person shows Gal's reaction afterwards.. that would be the highlight of the night by far
I haven't seen Nickel Boys or I'm still Here yet but.. Anora The Brutalist Dune 2 A Complete Unknown Conclave Wicked The Substance Emilia Perez
Idk who my favorite performance of the year has been. The last scene with Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor in Nickel Boys knocked me out. Justice Smith is excellent in TV Glow.
20 minutes into Emilia Perez cause I most likely have covid and am in a foggy haze so I said fuck it and I feel like I’m tripping or something. How did this get made let alone get so many nominations?
It truly comes out swinging with the insanity. If anything one big criticism I have is that it doesn’t keep it up throughout. They really try to have it every which way. If they would have leaned into the campiness of it then I think it possibly could have worked in the end. But you can’t both have the vaginoplasty song *and* expect me to completely take seriously your concern about the cartel hiding bodies
Truly a baffling film. It felt like 2 scripts shoved together with the second half seemingly forgetting it was a musical at times. It felt like a fever dream.
I've only seen 3 of the best picture nominations but my rank is easy 1) Anora 2) Substance (really liked this but not as much as anora) 3) Conclave (this was "fine" but I have no idea why this is nominated. It was a very okay Vatican whodunnit) I have 0 interest in Wicked. And one day I will invest the time into dune but it seems so daunting haha. I have to see Emilia Perez. The discourse is too strong and I gotta see the hubbub. Intentional or not but the "it sucks" marketing on Instagram worked because now I gotta see it Should I see any of the other movies?
I’m Still Here should get more love too - beautiful film. I think it’s great a Brazilian film is nominated for BP even if it’s not drawing a lot of “discourse.” Fernanda Torres is unreal in that and while it’s historical, the story is extremely prescient for Americans too. Fantastic soundtrack as well.
Saw Nickel Boys. I would put it second behind Anora. The reason why Anora is still my main pick is I think it just absolutely nailed the basics of a snappy 3 act "traditional" film, which I think in this day and age I personally find more impressive to successfully pull off than visual heavy experimental avant garde piece like a Nickel Boys or a Brutalist. Anora's script and Mikey's performance I think is what pushes it over the edge for me. Now I am torn if it should be Nickel Boys or Brutalist for Director and Cinematography. Both are absolutely stunning beautifully shot films.
That "moment" in Nickel Boys is the kind of thing that makes you rediscover the magic of film. To me it was more than just an avant-garde visual experiment since there's a deep emotional resonance to the visual trick and that's what makes it land for me. Truly felt like an eye-opening sequence that expanded the medium
Since we're all watching movies I got to plug Evil Does Not Exist, the actual best picture of last year
I’ve been desperately trying to convince my wife to watch that with me but we have been trying to hit all the actual noms first. The Beast is also on our queue.
I watch good and bad movies. I just said the other day Hard Truths was great and deserved more recognition. Jean-Baptiste had the best performance of the year.
