I have seen every winner going back to probably the mid-Nineties or so. It was never really on purpose, but usually that film is part of the cultural conversation. I don't watch all the nominees, though. There was something a few years ago about 9/11 and Tom Hanks that I couldn't watch. Lion too maybe?
Thank goodness!! I wanted to watch it at the cinema but the only screenings were at 8:50pm at my local cinema.. no earlier ones unfortunately.
Lion is a great film and it reminded me that Dev Petel was the first og Skins cast member to get Oscar nominated in general for his performance in Lion!
Green Book is offensive and awful in all the ways you have seen many times before. There is no reason to watch it. However, you kind of have to actually see something like Crash to get how terrible it is.
I haven’t seen: A Beautiful Mind Chicago Slumdog King’s Speech Argo Spotlight Shape of Water Nomadland CODA
21st century winners: 1. Moonlight 2. Parasite 3. No Country for Old Men Those are the genuinely great films. 4. The Departed 5. Oppenheimer 6. Million Dollar Baby 7. The Hurt Locker 8. Gladiator 9. The Lord of the Rings 3 10. Nomadland Those are the good ones. 11. Spotlight 12. CODA 13. 12 Years a Slave 14. The Artist These are okay. They get maligned more than they probably deserve because of the expectations of awards. 15. The Shape of Water 16. Chicago 17. Everything Everywhere All At Once 18. Slumdog Millionaire 19. Birdman 20. Argo These are pretty bad, but we can go deeper. 21. The King's Speech 22. A Beautiful Mind 23. Green Book 24. Crash The truly vile, hateful ones. The world would be a better place without them.
outside of green book since i haven't seen it: 1. Parasite 2. Moonlight 3. No Country for Old Men 4. The Departed 5. Gladiator 6. Lord of the Rings; Return of the King 7. Oppenheimer 8. Spotlight 9. The Hurt Locker 10. CODA 11. Nomadland 12. Birdman 13. Million Dollar Baby 14. 12 Years a Slave 15. Argo 16. Chicago 17. Everything Everywhere All At Once 18. A Beautiful Mind 19. Slumdog Millionaire 20. The Shape of Water 21. The King's Speech 22. The Artist 23. Crash
I love EEAAO but I think it would have been better off if it didn’t sweep that year. Everything got so weird when that was happening
Anyone who doesn't have No Country for Old Men/Parasite/Moonlight in their top three will have to answer questions.
The Departed is super rewatchable but it’s not even a top 10 Marty. But if the oscars didn’t recognize him then, idk when they would because his late period masterworks keep going home empty handed
im not saying its the best Scorsese movie lol I'm just saying I could see someone arguing that they like it more than no country for old men though I stated myself I do not
I know it’s not high art and probably has no business being a Best Picture winner, but I genuinely loved CODA. All of the emotionally manipulative aspects of that movie played me like a fiddle. At least 50 percent of this is because of the Joni Mitchell song, which does so much heavy lifting in that movie.
if the Academy cared about Scorsese, they would've nominated Silence in more categories than cinematography
