What discourse would there be to have about Conclave in that situation? It would just be memes referencing it
Conclave is fine but the thing that sticks out to me most is that, for a film about unveiling scandals within the Catholic Church, is there even a single reference to the child sex abuse scandals? We’re supposed to be scandalized about some priest having a secret kid when *that* whole thing is just lingering in the background?
My only contribution to the Conclave discourse is it's a very conventionally entertaining and well assembled popcorn movie with a pretty milquetoast liberal message. It's closer to an airport novel than a serious art film, it's not better than at least 6 movies in this year's race, and yet somehow it still would be the best BP winner since Parasite aside from Oppenheimer
it is going to become the lowest domestic grossing best picture winner ever. by a factor of the least amount of people seeing it compared to any other winner i don’t see how this won’t be the case.
Sean Baker is only going to grow in esteem so more and more people will discover Anora and his earlier films.
probably a dozen winners i can think of off the top of my head that are funnier than anora not to say they're better movies necessarily but come on
I was on the train and couldnt think of any without looking it up which I didnt do because of being on the train
oppenheimer had some good laughs throughout. argo is a much worse movie but is funnier. the departed. nevermind the old, old winners of which there are several straightforward comedies
basically the entirety of damon's character. jack quaid playing the bongos. benny with the sunblock. sneaky funny movie.
Im talking about movies that are closest to being comedies. Movies that have scenes where the primary purpose is to set up a joke and comedy is important to the movie working. Im off the train and looking the winners list now.
