True but Mikey has a long career ahead of her and she will get nominated and win an Oscar at some point but with Demi.. who knows when something like this will ever happen again and Hollywood loves a comeback story so I think this is her time now
I mean that’s not set in stone that she will definitely be nominated again let alone win one. Her performance is 100x better so she should win.
Conclave wins Best Film Cast SAG. I don't think this is comparable to Oscar Best Picture since it's just an acting award though
I’m sorry but I dislike when people say this (as I have seen it on quite a few forums, not just with this reply)…there’s truly no guarantee she will ever be nominated or have a solid shot at winning again and down the line it becomes a situation like Demi or when Leo won where they win more because of the narrative that the performance itself (I’m not saying Demi is completely undeserving but she has the narrative going for her like Leo did). People have said the same thing about Timothee dating back to CMBYN and I just don’t think age should factor in to whether someone should win or whether someone thinks someone should win.
Kind of figured Conclave would scoop that one. IMO, still the movie running second place in the Best Picture race, but I think Anora will be fine.
Not really on topic, but it still bums me out that Leo won the "career Oscar" for The Revenant and then didn't have the narrative juice on his side when Once Upon a Time in Hollywood came around. Would much rather he have the Academy Award for the latter performance, not to mention the side benefit of Joaquin Phoenix not winning it for that fucking Joker movie.
A lot Oscar films kinda fade into obscurity and stopped getting talked about soon after Oscar season. I don't think Conclave is gonna be one of those. It may not be the best film nominated, but I think it's one people are going to talk about and been seen as culturally important 10 years from now. Great example is the 2014 Oscars. Birdman won, but Whiplash ended up being the nominated film that year that remained the most culturally relevant years later.
I liked conclave but I could not disagree more. No one will be talking about that film after this year.
Another example of this is Jamie Lee Curtis’s win in 2023…like that should have been Stephanie Hsu’s award but the age narrative reigns supreme and in the end JLC won the trophy, and there’s no guarantee Hsu will ever be up for an award like that again (especially because she’s Asian but that’s a different discussion)
Also not to go into the whole “category fraud!!!” claim here because I feel like that’s being talked to death elsewhere…but I think Guy Pearce or Edward Norton should be winning Supporting Actor over Kieran Culkin.
Conclave is the only Oscar film this season I have felt compelled to watch multiple times. I think that's why I say that. It sticks with you.
Plus when Francis dies and the actual Conclave happens discourse about that film is going to be everywhere and inescapable.
definitely the only ones of this crop that will be discussed in any ongoing way are brutalist, nickel boys if ross continues making narrative features, a complete unknown bc timmee, dune 2 and wicked. anora and conclave are better movies than several of those but they aren’t going to be remembered any more than coda or nomadland are
It's also kinda weird for Margaret Qualley but she's a beautiful nepo baby who is a dynamic screen presence so she'll be fine
