I know slaps fall under the definition of violence, but an open hand slap has got to be the least violent thing you can do to someone physically. So the people who keep playing up that it’s VIOLENCE just comes across like hyperbole. I don’t condone what he did, but acting like you can’t understand why he did it seems disingenuous. The joke sucked. The slap sucked. Next time maybe focus on the nominees rather than their guests, especially ones you’ve already talked smack about.
There really are a lot of hypocritical takes in here at this point so I'll just chalk it up to love for big willy and hate for Chris Rock. Politics/accountability thread = silence is violence & certain vulgar language= sexual assault, yet here, a physical slap across the face = THAT'S NOT VIOLENCE, THAT'S HYPERBOLE.
There are much, much worse things happening in the world to have such strong reactions to but nope, got to waste it on someone getting slapped lol
I don’t post in the political thread. So using what I said to make this point is well, pointless. I said the slap sucked and I didn’t condone it. But sure, I guess I’m blinded by my love of an actor? Please. I don’t hate Chris Rock. I think he intentionally or unintentionally made an awful bad joke. But sure, I hate him. just more hyperbole. At least you’re consistent, I guess.
God, I really wanted to respond with this, but I just couldn’t. But I want to share it. *slap* KEEP MY WORDS OUT OF YOUR POST! KEEP MY WORDS OUT OF YOUR POST!
This is how I feel right now. I want to fire the scriptwriters for the world because this week's episode sucks.
There are always other things to focus on when you look at it that way. And I think that's precisely why everyone is having a reaction to this and getting involved. It's something to talk about that's not war/politics. It was an insane thing that happened at an awards show that we all saw and it's a distraction for a few days. Fair enough dude. I wasn't calling you out with the comment, just the tone of this thread compared to others. I am probably homogenizing this community with that comment. But I still don't get saying that calling it violence is hyperbole. Even if he just lost his cool and got on stage and started cussing in Rock's face, I'd still be of the opinion that it wasn't an appropriate way to express displeasure/anger at what was said.
I love Chris Rock too, for what it’s worth, it could have been me that got slapped and I’d still share memes here
The weird, hysterical fantasy of “what if” has truly only made good things possible, right? Not bad things worse? Surely
I just told my fiancé that in Japan King Richard is called Tennis Daddy and she believed me, which makes the joke so much funnier to me, inside
taking what only I said and putting it in all caps kind of makes me a focus. Unintentional or not. That’s an emphasis that you put on your post, pal. like I said, it may be violence by definition, but within the context of violence, this will barely register. If I told someone that I was violently attacked it’s fair to assume no one would think I got slapped and that’s it. That’s not where the kind goes because it implies far worse actions. Again, a slap is an act of violence by definition, but it’s obtuse to think that’s the best way to describe getting slapped once. The only reason to consistently call it violent is if you want the audience to think worse of Smith than based on what he actually did. Why would one do that? I’ll let you draw your conclusions here and not make any guess myself. That’s what you need to think about. So using words wouldn’t be acceptable either? Really? I can assure you, Chris Rock can take some verbal jabs, he’s a fucking comedian. Gonna go out on a limb and say this isn’t the first time he’s told a bad distasteful joke and gotten a strong reaction.
Some excellent films came out this year and some were even nominated. Shame a lot of the winners sucked and the academy couldn't be bothered to celebrate them in a meaningful way. God Edgar's tweets about Hamaguchi getting played off THREE TIMES reminded me how infuriating that moment was
