Ah yes the longform takes are coming in hot Will Smith: can his career survive – or is the Fresh Prince finished?
What a rock bottom moment for an awards show. The reason comics are often hired to host and present at award shows is to serve as a reality check in the world of make believe which is Hollywood. You may not like the joke, but comparing someone with a similar look to a famous female movie character who overcame all obstacles of a male dominated environment to achieve her goal (the plot of GI Jane) isn’t that bad. Even if Chris Rock was aware of her medical condition, we are talking about baldness, hair and vanity. He didn’t make a joke about their strange marriage behaviour, affairs or children. And that’s not to say there can’t be hurt feelings or even addressed, although they are aware they are attending an award show where this kind of thing routine happens, but to physically strike a man, especially unexpectedly is a new low and huge disservice to those who paved they way for him and those who come after him. It seemed more of a attack out of shame. Chris Rock handled the situation like a pro, but unfortunately this was an example of work place violence, and the academy, security, producers and everyone involved should be ashamed and consequences needed to occur as a result. It’s really a sad a pathetic situation, and nothing more than a brief distraction to all the real bad things going on in the world. It’s scary when a persons ego leads to entitlement and you see actions don’t have consequences. It’s become a really running theme.
Did you catch when they were playing Radiohead going into a commercial and he was just all over the place on it. It was bizarre.
“But there is quite a lot more to be said. This crisis is by no means over.” from the guardian piece lol good lord
This was not a private event, but an industry event. Chris Rock was functioning in a professional role of presenting, so love him or hate him, Agree or disagree, this was an assault of cast member during a live broadcast event.
For real. I don't know that it should happen in this case but honestly they should take them away from people (Woody Allen, Mel Gibson, Harvey Weinstein, etc.)! Often!
I think there’s a good reason your take is getting criticized sans an argument about the technical truth of the words as written.
