I’m just glad the slap took all the attention off the movies and reminded us what The Oscars are supposed to be about: the egos of rich celebrities

Not only did he win an award after he hit Chris Rock, but then he said he was called on by God to protect his family, and that he was a vessel for love. Reality really is stranger than fiction lmao

I’m sorry but punching Chris Rock for dissing your wife on stage right before getting that Oscar just makes the run even wilder to me. I know it might be bad for to feel this way but I cannot help it :crylaugh:

Chris Rock made an incredibly tasteless and not funny joke about a medical struggle Jada is having and should have fully been addressed and pushed out from having that platform in the future and should absolutely catch major shit for it.

Will Smith of course was upset by that, after seeing how his wife felt as well, but shouldn't have walked up on live TV and slapped the shit out of Chris Rock.

I feel a little weird it all, even though that doesn't directly affect this situation, that Jada formed a relationship with her son's friend that seemed a bit problematic. I don't know Will and Jada's marriage set-up, but Will seemed incredibly hurt by that and I wonder if that played in at any to his need to protect her honor with physical violence.

Really curious to see how this would have been handled if someone else made that joke. (Namely a female comedian)

Bizarre that they just let the show go on and let Will accept an award and talk about spreading love. If a poor, non-famous black man went up and slapped the shit out of someone, I don't see them getting away with that.

The entire attention and buzz of the night is now on Will Smith and Chris Rock rather than on Coda, a wonderful film that highlighted the struggle of deaf people.

The awards shows are a weird self-fellating mess usually and this is a train wreck.

The academy also has a history of enabling abusers like Harvey and Woody Allen.

It's actually not even the slap that was shocking to me, it was the yelling afterwards. I dunno, but hearing jolly fun loving Will Smith screaming the word Fuck with rage in his eyes gave me the creeps.

I think that a lot of his speech was an indirect reaction to his marriage situation, or at least it seemed that way. A lot of people in this thread were praising the speech but I just saw someone with a broken heart and who maybe needs help. He was weeping. I felt so uncomfortable.

As unimportant as all of this is, this is the only question I really have. I kind of assume he was just being light about a seemingly shaved look.

Otherwise, no need to take sides in an issue where both people involved are well off celebrities who did the wrong thing to each other.

Unless you somehow have a more insane take than Judd Aptow, keep Will’s name out of your fucking mouth

What a shitty speech. Lol. No apology to Chris Rock, and what he said was completely at odds with his actions from earlier.

Now I know, to do what we do, you've got to be able to take abuse. You got to be able to have people talk crazy about you.In this business, you've got to be able to have people disrespecting you, and you've got to smile and you've got to pretend like that's OK.

Like didn't you do the exact opposite when you smacked the shit out of someone on live TV?

And the whole, love makes you do stupid things...

This is of course hilarious but also lol specifically at saying “next time a comedian gets heckled by a woman and responds…”

Like yeah man that’s what led up to it, sure lol
