a pretty harmless slap over an extremely distasteful joke kind of is yes. should it have been done backstage and then a fraction of the people find out from tweets about it instead of seeing it live? sure.

Will obviously comes out of this looking like an idiot and I’m not above finding insult comedy funny sometimes but I’m surprised how much of the internet is rushing to throw in how harmless the joke was as if making fun of someone for how a condition affects their appearance isn’t punching down at all let alone several steps down the ladder.

I’m mostly surprised by how many people online are telling on themselves last night/this morning by classifying a joke about someone with a physical condition that affects their appearance “harmless”

And it was such a dumb hack joke to begin with. I’ve heard that same joke so many times before when describing women who’s shaved their heads, since 1997 when GI Jane came out.

The fact that she has a condition that’s caused her hair loss makes the joke completely uncalled for/tasteless. Shouldn’t have even been a thought to joke about her.

  5. Siri, how do I block the meme format where people just put Smith and Rock’s names on images of other slaps from pop culture?

Gotta be honest, for a place that claims to be a safe place online it’s kinda embarrassing how many of ya’ll are defending violence in the name of a hacky joke. Is the level of violence being complete overblown like that dumbass tweet from Judd Apatow? Sure. I just find it funny how the reaction people get around here is “a person said something crass, so he deserves physical violence against him.”

Or people are just willing to look at it with any level of nuance and say it’s not crazy someone got slapped for making fun of something traumatic. There aren’t too many Smith defenders in here anyways, they both look bad today imo.

If anything, the worst joke of the night to me was the hosts patting down a couple of attractive male presenters per “covid protocol” with Brolin going so far as to “assume the position” while everybody in the audience yukked it up like “ha ha sexual assault is hilarious!” just a few years after the height of the Me Too movement. Glad we all learned our lessons, Hollywood.

violence is okay. actually it can be very good at times.

in this case violence was pretty good, imo.

It was a slap. Calling it “violence” is a bit much. I’ve had worse things happen to me on accident rough housing with friends. Chris Rock told a very inappropriate shitty joke and got what he deserved. Will Smith could have done much worse if he desired. Someone please get all the white people on my FB to stop asking for him to be arrested. Our law enforcement has much more racist things to do than to arrest some rich dude from slapping another rich dude.

Will Smith is really one of the most inspirational figures of all time tbh imagine being so big that you can punch someone in the face live on TV at the biggest awards ceremony in the world and then still get an award on that same night. Only Big Willie could do that shit :crylaugh:

I’m not defending violence, but I’m also not going to act like Chris is innocent or some type of comedic hero.

Every pro-Chris comment I’ve seen online is completely void of any concern that Jada’s medical condition was used for a cheap laugh in front of the world. That’s an issue.

Whatever one's opinion is of how Will handled the situation, I'd like to think that insulting someone's medical condition live on television is something we can all agree is wrong no matter the circumstances. But, obviously, that isn't the case.

I think the only thing we can all agree on is that August Alsina was lucky these weren't the Grammys

I know I missed it live but I can't imagine seeing that shit happen and then trying to make a serious, important, take instead of just laughing at the chaos. Will Smith fucking hit Chris Rock on TV! And then apologized to the Academy after he won a fucking Oscar!

Serious question though, did Chris know? One would think SOMEONE in his group would have let him know. Just embarrassing for all involved.
