Paul Thomas Anderson has received 11 nominations in his life and still has never won. REALLY hope that changes.
This is my catch-up list, excluding all the shorts, which I'll check out in theaters. https://letterboxd.com/landondefever/list/oscars-22-catch-up/
Typical Oscars - some very cool noms and some dogshit ones. The Cool Drive My Car getting love in BP, Directing, Adapted Screenplay The Worst Person in the World getting in for original screenplay All the love for Power of the Dog LP at least getting 3 noms Nightmare Alley getting in the BP slot over something like Being The Ricardos is a win Sorkin getting snubbed The Dogshit Javier Bardem & Nicole Kidman getting nominated at all Kenneth Branagh getting nominated for best director (seriously where the fuck is Villenueve) Free Guy & Spiderman getting visual effects noms when they both look awful especially when Matrix or The Suicide Squad or even The French Dispatch would be better choices there Speaking of which, No French Dispatch noms at all is a bummer King Richard for editing lol - I like the movie but c'mon Coming 2 America for Makeup & Hairstyling is super funny but might be deserved tbh
Villenueve should be in over Branagh for sure but I wouldn't call Branagh's nomination "dogshit". It's dogshit that Denis didn't get it, sure, but at least McKay and Sorkin didn't either.
I mean, if you look at the 5 nominated for best director, Branagh sticks out the most as someone that shouldn't be there
Yeah, Villenueve should definitely be in over Branagh. Realistically, Hamaguchi probably got in over Villenueve because Branagh's been a lock for a while, but I agree as far as quality goes.
I'm guessing the academy is waiting to see how Dune Part 2 pans out before they take Villenueve seriously again
He does but he made a really good movie and I'm not mad he's in there. He's the one I'd swap for Denis for sure. But like it's not a travesty like it would have been if McKay or Sorkin had been nominated. Like I said, I'm more mad the Denis isn't in there than I am that Branagh is.
It wouldn't shock me in the slightest if Belfast got completely shut out. I think the only thing it realistically could win is Original Screenplay.
And yeah PTA/Hamaguchi took spots which could have gone to Denis, which is another reason I'm not too mad about it. Branagh, Campion, and Stevie were all locks. Granted, I thought Denis was a lock too but oh well.
This might be Netflix's year, Power of the Dog & Jane Campion do feel like the ones to beat - which great! Fucking incredible film and would be a very cool bp winner... However there is the chaotic chance that Don't Look Up wins...
I think Denis, PTA, Campion and Branagh were all locks and that fifth slot was kind of up in the air between Spielberg and Hamaguchi, but both up in the airs ended up getting in.
I didn't think PTA was necessarily a lock going in. I thought he had a good chance to get the fifth spot, but I also thought McKay and Sorkin had a chance given the Academy's love of mediocrity. I'm glad PTA and Hamaguchi got it, bummed Villenueve didn't, but I don't hate the 5 they went with.
And yeah, The Suicide Squad should've been in for visual effects over Free Guy. Absolutely ridiculous that it wasn't.
I’d also say that Rachel Zegler deserved a nomination too. But she’s young and still has time to portray some historic figure to get the Academy’s attention.
