I'm just here for all the "oscars are stupid and totally meaningless!" in the same breath of complaining about their favorite movies being snubbed.

Can Parasite still win without a screenplay nomination? Idk the stats on that.

Woops, nvm. I read an article that did not mention the screenplay nom, just director, editing, and production design.

    I was right. Prestigious

hoping Parasite and Little Women win as much as possible. so psyched that Florence got nominated!

  9. Haven't seen Little Women yet, but I really liked/loved every other film nominated for BP, which is rare. Last year had Bohemian, Green Book, and Vice, and 2017 had Darkest Hour and Three Billboards, so this is an improvement on that front. Although, for a lot of people, Joker is that movie this year.

The Lighthouse getting a cinematography nom is cool, but it getting ignored for anything else is not. Was hoping for more recognition for Knives Out, but a screenplay nom is nice.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire getting nothing is disappointing. I haven't seen the other International noms other than Parasite, but few movies in recent memory have evoked the emotional response from me that Portrait was able to.

  10. 1917 getting a screenplay nomination makes no sense to me. Or VFX for that matter? Maybe I'm ignorant of what those categories actually entail.

Joker is that movie this year for sure but tbh i think its better than the other five you mentioned.

    Also, WATCH LITTLE WOMEN

  12. Joker and Jojo getting nominated for Costume Design seems weird too.

I know, I know. Planning to sometime in the next few days.

People keep talking about how bad Joker is, but I would watch it every day for a week rather than watch Jojo Rabbit again.

  14. I don't see Jojo winning any of the categories it was nominated for. I'm honestly surprised it got this much recognition from the Academy.

Yay for The Lighthouse cinematography nom!

    Midsommar was totally snubbed

  16. Not a lot of love for A24 in general. They released a lot of good movies in 2019. The Lighthouse, Midsommar, Uncut Gems, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, High Life, The Souvenir (didn't love this one, but I see its merit).

Apparently studios campaigning for their films have a lot to do with getting nominated, so I'm guessing that has something to do with the lack of recognition. Also, aside from maybe Uncut Gems, these movies aren't the types of movies the Oscars usually nominate.

Very glad Parasite got a lot of recognition but otherwise a lot of snubs for people who deserved better and too much Joker.

    Ranking Best Picture Noms:

Once Upon A Time ... In Hollywood (Best directed and most fun I've had watching a movie all year)
Parasite (I'm not certain this ISN'T the best picture of the year but I have to at least say this was fucking awesome)

((((Uncut Gems) - WHY WAS THIS COMPLETELY IGNORED??))))

    Marriage Story (Acting powerhouse!)

Joker (I'm very irritated that this has so many nominations, I liked the movie enough but not worth any prestige at all)
Jojo Rabbit (I expected to like this more but it wasn't bad, just confused why it's nominated here)
The Irishman (Everyone really loves this movie, I'm sorry you guys I just found it awfully boring.. I"M SORRY)

    I have yet to see..
1917 (Definitely was going to watch this in theaters sometime this week)
Little Women (Haven't gotten around to this one yet but now I will)
Ford V Ferrari (Wasn't really planning on watching but now I guess I will)

They are on completely different levels. Joker is just a lazy Scorsese ripoff. Jojo Rabbit makes you dumber for having watched it.

as nice as it is for the Lighthouse to get a cinematography nom, if we could only get one or the other I was more impressed by Midsommar's

Obviously Atlantics too but I knew that movie was never sniffing the Academy Awards
