I was cooling down after a jog yesterday when I saw that it had been uploaded to Netflix. 5 minutes ended up turning into the first 35 minutes.

Thought the movie stunk and it’s sad we rarely get good blockbuster movies because people accept slop like that stinker. I also forgot those movies attract the MCU crowd and you aren’t allowed to criticize movies in those threads without people getting upset.

It was all in good fun on my part and I even told people to enjoy the movie if they want. I stopped posting though so people wouldn’t cry anymore.

What did you all like about Sunshine?

Sitting through Alex Garlands junky self important sci-fi dialogue or when a they got attacked by a sunburnt man?

I don't love the 'being attacked by sunburnt Mark Strong' part in idea or in execution, but I love the first ⅔'s of the movie and the very ending. I wouldn't call the movie 'dumb' in that they actually worked to try to get a lot of the science stuff right, similar to Christopher Nolan with Interstellar, and I tend to like any sci-fi that takes itself seriously and tries to get at least a bit of the 'sci' part right. I also love the gorgeous visuals, with that scene I already mentioned where the whole crew watches Mercury pass in front of the sun being a great example.

I think if the Pinbacker stuff was handled differently by the script (or possibly even if it was executed differently, but this I am less sure about) I would argue that it was an all-time science fiction classic.

I echo all that - I appreciated how they tried to get the science/physics right, at least for the first 2/3rds of the film. Some of the futuristic stuff about the ship was cool too, such as the sun viewing room, the 3D Earth visualization room was dope, the big plant room was awesome to see, etc. Score was incredible, and just visually it was a stunning film to look at. Crashing a giant cube of uranium to "restart" the sun is a pretty wild idea (and incredibly inpractical; the explosion would be nowhere near powerful enough to do what they wanted in the story, haha), but it was fun/cool to see it play out on screen, despite the Pinbacker character plot.

drastically different movies, but how I feel about Sunshine is a lot like how I feel about Event Horizon: highly enjoyable but deeply flawed sci-fi film that had a strong chance at being an all-timer but didn't quite get there

Catching up on this thread has been educational. I learned there's a film called Sunshine, Grimace is a grump grump, and Ferrari is the fucking Mad Bomber What Bombs At Midnight.
