I’m pretty much willing to hear an argument than any one of PTA’s films is his best film (except maybe Hard Eight. He disowned it)

He is a good actor. I also don’t need to see him in the lead of every movie that I want to see for the next 10 years

Twitter has been running a hard campaign that Phantom Thread is his best and I just can’t get behind that

personally I think the last 3 are also his 3 best and PT might be at the tippy top. The Master and TWBB have stretches of greatness but both test my patience.

I have no real desire to rewatch. I enjoyed it, nothing has drawn me back to it. Same with LP. I should rewatch Inherent Vice though

I rewatched the Departed this year so I feel confident saying this: good movie. Funny movie. Wildly overrated, not in the top half of Scorsese’s filmography.

Bottom 5 in the feature lengths that I’ve seen of his.

And to be clear, Leo isn’t bad or a weak link in it. He just doesn’t command the screen in every scene he is in, like Cruise does in just about every movie he is in. One true star baby!

It’s not my favorite but I think if I was going to throw on a PTA to rewatch right now it would be Inherent Vice.

The more I think about the Leo thing, the more I realize that he is in this uncanny valley during this stage as an actor. He’s caught between leading man and wanting to have character actor roles. I don’t think he's as interesting of a leading man as someone like Cruise or even Clooney, and I don’t think he’s talented enough of an actor to fully disappear into a weirdo character actor role like DeNiro does in Taxi Driver or King of Comedy.

Wolf works because he just takes his natural dickhead handsome persona to the fullest extreme (and has some really funny physical acting that I don’t usually see him do) and Hollywood works because he’s playing an actor stuck between those two stages of his career.

I haven’t seen The Revenant, he may be great in that too

  16. Yeah, it's a grower.

Taking Licorice Pizza over TWBB or The Master is legitimate crazy talk

  17. Inherent Vice is definitely underrated

I liked The Revenant but plenty of other actors could have done that role.

Saw the revenant once. It’s fine. Will never watch it again.

I think Leo is a pretty good actor that gets cool movies made and works with great directors. He’s selective with work so every new movie he does is appointment viewing for me. Sometimes we get burned but it’s usually an interesting choice. Recent example was when I was excited to see him make a comedy with Adam McKay but it turned out to be a nightmare because McKay has completely lost the plot.

ok as long as we're imagining swapping out actors, scott glenn would have killed it in the sean penn role based on the lil glimpse we get here
