I was wondering if you had seen this yet because of what you said about Eddington and Bugonia an hour or two ago

  9. It’s truly a masterpiece. Something I’ll throw on a lot even if to just watch specific scenes.

Just watched this tonight! Was really hoping to love it but strangely found myself unable to sink into it. Still putting together my thoughts on exactly why I didn’t connect with it like seemingly everyone else did. Idk :verysad::shrug:

Has anyone here only seen this on their TV/laptop and been blown away by it? I feel like having my ears assaulted by the sound design and hearing how much the audience laughed were big parts of what shook me out of my PTA skepticism that I went in with. I thought it’d be artsy and intentional but not for me and I was disarmed by how it managed to be both overwhelming in its auteur cinema-ness yet crowd-pleasing and fun as a movie.

most PTA movies are stylish crowd pleasers IMO. his movies are grand affairs but he's never really made anything too esoteric (besides maybe Magnolia, which is strange but not overly complex at all) though there are still a few I need to get to.

I don’t think PDL or The Master are crowd pleasers

I would say The Master and TWBB are difficult films for the average person. The fact that the milkshake scene became a huge pop culture joke is a miracle. Different world

I will always remember the Movie Gallery clerk strongly warning my mother not to rent Punch-Drunk Love.

Is Boogie Nights considered PTAs most accessible film, still? Or did Battle take it?

I’m using crowd-pleaser in the sense that you could walk away having had a great experience, whether or not you’re a PTA fan. IMO, for better or worse, depending on whether you love PTA or not, he usually makes great PTA films. Again, IMO.

I will say that I thought Inherent Vice didn’t feel as PTA coded to me and it’s his other movie that I personally liked the most. That wasn’t a crowd pleaser but I really liked its vibe and could live in that world for 20+ more hours.

I haven’t seen Punch or Phantom Thread.

Either could work. I think for the normie in question it depends on how they feel about either film’s content (whether they are more put off by the adult film industry or revolutionaries)
