I think I preferred Eddington (time will tell) but OBAA is better on a technical level. Definitely my 1 and 2 for the year and if something else comes along to top them, I'll be amazed/enthused.

Del Toro’s line read of ‘a few small beers’ was so good. Can’t wait to see this again

Mum did not like the swearing, the very loud bangs or the violence. Did like the justice, the girl and her good plan, laughed very hard at Leo on the phone.

Was not happy that I pitched it as "from the maker of Phantom Thread, you liked that one" continued to say things like "can't believe I paid 53 dollars for 1000 F's"

Is calling her friend Jill tomorrow to complain more about the swearing, also really liked Tetra's Mario Kart tiktok meme as a Todette main herself.

The erection wasn't mentioned, she was very eager to watch the credits to find out "that was Sean Penn!"

Another masterpiece from PTA. Like his best work, it's the kind of film that only gets stronger the more you think about it. There are so many small details that feel like they add to the overarching narrative in subtle but meaningful ways. I agree that it's a great girl dad movie, it sympathizes with the terror and anxiety of raising one in the world we live in, but remains hopeful that they'll probably be way more adept at dealing with it than we are.

The cast is phenomenal, as usual, with each character bringing out the best traits of their respective actors. Leo plays bumbling and belligerent so well, but has enough sincerity to sell the somber moments too. Chase and Teyana both had a similar intensity and drive to their performances, while obviously still being very different, I think they worked wonderfully as a generational parallel. Sean Penn was equally horrifying and hilarious. I think this might be the funniest film of the year, it's up there at least, I was in hysterics multiple times throughout.

I think it's probably my favourite film of the year so far, and I already look forward to seeing it again.

Saw this again last night. Reminds me sooooo much of the Coens / Burn After Reading (esp the Christmas Adventurers roundtable). Felt like I was transported back to watching the scenes with JK Simmons in Burn After Reading more times than not lol

Also - saw it yesterday. Movie rules. Probably my fav of the year with Eddington as well but I agree with whoever said this smokes it. PTA operating at this level is so good. This would be most directors best film and what, it's his like 3rd, 4th, 5th, so debatable lol.

PTA is gonna go down as the best of his generation, the sheer quality of his output alone solidifies it.
