I've finally stopped being bitter enough to talk about how I signed up for a test screening for this movie at a Regal in Chicago like 3-4 months ago that got canceled the day of. They rescheduled it like a week later and I couldn't make the new date but my friend did; after the test screening they announced that they had just screened the finished movie and PTA was there and bouncing between the two rooms in the theater that were showing it. Also apparently he just walked out the front door after the movie was over, got in a limo and drove off

also my friend said the movie was great

Well yeah, because his run from Magnolia to The Master is almost flawless. Second-tier Anderson is still better than almost any other filmmaker, though.

I was the perfect age and in the perfect moment of my own film discovery when I saw Magnolia for the first time. I remember finishing it at like 3am and thinking it was the single best movie I had ever seen. I have cooled a lot on it since (PTA himself thinks he should tighten it up) but I think im ready to fall in love with it again with another rewatch

  9. Magnolia has been a grower for me. I think about Cruise's performance at least weekly.

And he fully does not understand Tarantino's "10 Movies and I'm done" rule. PTA wants to make movies til he drops dead on a set.

Anderson served as assistant director for Robert Altman on A Prairie Home Companion because insurance wouldn't cover the production due to Altman's age. A very honorable assist to one of the aging greats.

It is weird to see advanced tickets and showtimes for an Anderson film. Usually it is weeks of waiting after the typical New York/Los Angeles premiere and rollout.

Rewatched licorice pizza a few weeks ago. Still enjoyed it but it’s probably near the bottom for me.

  21. Punch Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood, and Magnolia are my three favorites. I like everything I've seen (everything but Hard Eight at this point) but I really have to revisit The Master because it did not really click with me on my one watch. Also I was really h*gh when I watched Licorice Pizza and I had fun but I think I need to give that one another try lol

I have been dabbling in Vineland this last week and it's very cool, interested to see how the film draws from the novel

vineland is surely one of my least favorite pynchons but it would still be an a-tier release for many of his contemporaries

Have you read any Pynchon? I didnt rate PTA attempt but also got the impression it would be better as a book

    Edit: I havent read any

Inherent Vice years ago before the movie and I loved it. His “essentials” are on my list
