I find Eli Roth borderline unwatchable in that movie.

 

He just wasn't intimidating enough to do the character justice.

 

I thought he was great. He came off as a young hothead who’s trying to prove himself to being a crazy vengeance killer.

 

I don’t love Roth as an actor, but frankly it’s hard to see Sandler in the role either.

 

I can see Sandler laying waste to some Nazis

i actually find roth's presence to be fairly intimidating. it's one of the few aspects of his performance that worked for me. maybe the only part.

 

The general absurdity of the Basterds works as a good contrast to the Shoshanna and Landa parts.

 

bj novak is one of the basterds. it's not like any of them have any sort of acting pedigree. it's supposed to be a rag tag group. honestly, it would probably stand out as odd with someone of sandler's stature.

 

I liked Roth in IB, didn’t realize people didn’t like him there

 

it's the only thing that doesn't quite fit in an otherwise near perfect film

 

He’s in like 3 scenes total, and the most memorable one he is appropriately more of a comical shit head than an actually intimidating war hero or whatever. Like the other Basterds, he treats beating a nazi’s head in more like a game than some great act of political defiance. Really don’t know what people want or expect out of his character that you didn’t get

 

good acting?

 

It’s just the obnoxious bad accent that bothers me.

 

I just explained how he is “good” within the context of the film. He fulfills the role as intended. That’s about as objective of a metric of “good” vs “bad” as you can get. Maybe you just don’t like the character, or want it to be something it was never meant to be?

 

i appreciate that you offered some version of an explanation that makes sense to you, just not inclined to agree with it. seems lots of people like Roth and the performance so maybe me and a few others are the oddballs. doesn’t diminish the film for me in general but it’s the one piece of an otherwise perfect film that just doesn’t work

 

Roth offers nothing to the role, which is the issue. people make the argument that it’s a comical role so the fact that he’s laughable in it somehow makes it okay

it is interesting there are two mamas and papas songs on the soundtrack and two of the members are in the movie, and probably their biggest song is covered by someone else haha

 

gonna have to go catch this in theaters again this weekend

 

Wish this was playing in my theater, would love to see this on a big screen
