Counting the lines probably stems from a criticism of Django Unchained, which was that Jamie Foxx's wife barely spoke. She was basically a plot device, though, and that would be a criticism of filmmakers who always treat female characters that way, but he has made films where women are the central focus. A group of strong women kill Stuntman Mike; the Bride kills male and female opponents, Jackie Brown outsmarts career criminals. You go to Inglourious Basterds expecting Brad Pitt to be the lead, and a teenage girl takes down the Third Reich.

One of the funniest things about the Margot Robbie role controversy bullshit is this absurd implication that a character’s entire being is simply the words they say. As if dialogue and delivery aren’t just a small part of what acting entails. Some if not most of the best acting and character depiction ever is done without saying words. Who would have thought film critics of all people would have difficulty grasping the concept of “show, don’t tell”

Inglourious Basterds is an important example of this. All the men around Shosanna are talking constantly, but the camera usually keeps on her and we read her emotions through what she is thinking.

It would be nice to look at the money the film is making and getting excited for the state of movies, but it is extremely difficult for anyone to make a name for themselves the way Tarantino has. It has been said so many times that it is a cliche by now, but Tarantino, Pitt, and DiCaprio represent an end of an era the same way the film honors the end of the 60's.
