    Yep, hence the concern.

White male filmmakers love their heroes. I am nervous about how Tarantino would portray him, but cautiously choosing to believe after going through the personal connection with the Weinstein scandal, that he may have grown slightly more aware of how to handle this sort of thing.

Is there a way he would be portrayed negatively since all the sex crimes happened years after the events being depicted?

If this was another filmmaker, probably not. Unless they just had him as a general creep hanging out in the margins of the film or something. But this IS the guy who made Hitler get shot 40,000 times in a movie theater and then blown up.

i mean, i obviously haven’t seen it, but i have a hard time imagining a scenario where he’s anything more than a cameo/background character. as much as he likes to push buttons, QT has to be smarter than that.

That’s kind of what I’m wondering. I don’t think he necessarily needs to be portrayed as a creep, but I think portraying him as a sympathetic figure would probably be a miscalculation, even if the real life circumstances are tragic for everyone involved.

Then again I do think Tarantino plays with the history a bit and the situation portrayed onscreen likely doesn’t line up with what happened in reality, and given what that tweet said about the movie being an “ode to loss innocence, while suggesting it may have never had any”, I think Polanski as a character will likely be used less as a sympathetic auteur and more as a symbol of Hollywood and possibly it’s inherent troubles.

That’s reading a lot into the very little I know, though.

The fact that he went to the trouble of casting an established Polish actor and not just someone who is a lookalike makes me think he will be more than strictly in the background, but with this being as sprawling as it is and with such a HUGE cast, I also don’t expect him to be in a lot of it. It’s all in the tone of his portrayal.

Also I just saw (or reminded myself?) that Costa Ronin is in this and I’m super pumped about that.

I will say that all the female critics I follow who have seen this seem to really like it which is both very telling and, I have to admit, kind of surprising.

tbh i’m much more worried about his portrayal of manson than polanski, though i’m obviously not stoked to see the latter either.

i don’t find it that surprising. pre-django, he had pretty strong female characters, including a few leads, that seem to be highly praised by female critics

I dunno I’m very excited to see Manson in this movie, if Tarantino’s Hitler was any indication.

there’s much less of a cult fascination with hitler than manson hahaha

    Given the political climate...is there?

In seriousness Manson was a dumb shithead with nothing behind anything he said and I think that kind of character is one Tarantino can make work well

I totally get what you mean, but I might word that a little differently in this of all years.

I hope this movie portrays everything about the murder differently than most media has, that’s for sure.

i mean, yeah i should have worded that differently. i’m jewish, i don’t need any reminder of how many nazis there are around currently, hah. but that’s less of a “hitler ruled” thing and more of an “i’m a mouth breather who hates people that aren’t white and straight.”

but, there was an era where manson was, for lack of a better word, “cool.” i’m no historian, but that doesn’t really seem like it was ever the case for hitler.

i think (hope) QT is smarter than this, but i could see him playing into the mythology of manson a lot and not portraying it necessarily accurately. his hitler was basically a caricature. i don’t think the polanski role will be very big, but that’s wishful thinking.

Honestly, the fact that he got Sharon's sister's blessing makes me think that the movie will handle everything to do with Sharon herself with respect. It's why I'm worried about Polanski more than that, personally.

Oh yeah you’re definitely right about fascination with Manson being a thing. I hope Tarantino is going to take it in more interesting ways that haven’t been dealt with as much, in addition to being truer to what actually happened.

Looking forward to hearing what songs are used in the film.

Side note. I used to work with a guy at the theater in my town who would write and receive letters from Manson. The dude's fascination with him is creepy and he still occasionally has FB posts about him, thinking he was a cool dude.

My buddy sent to a sales promo advertisement to Gacy in jail while he was on death row and it came back to his work later on marked 'deceased' and he got fired for it, lol
