Love Gates but definitely seems to be overrated as it’s beaten out a lot of better songs imo... like Obituaries obviously deserves this wild card spot!
Gates isn't a bad song at all, its just overplayed and many songs on OTIP are much better imo. Give me Sun Hotel, Mexican Guitars, I Can't Seem to Tell, Burn, Obituaries and Good Things instead. I'd compare it to Devotion and Desire in terms of super popular songs that I like, but are overrated compared to the bands entire catalog.
Devotion and desire is so dull, gates at least has some good verses and a killer bridge. Sure there are better songs on OTIP but I don’t think it’s a bottom tier song on that album at all.
if i never heard devotion and desire ever again both live and through speakers i'd be fine with it tbh
Same. Sometimes I feel like the only one who isn’t going off when they close the set with it. So many good songs they could end with and devotion is just a buzzkill at this point.
yeah for sure. i feel that way with so much of Bayside's early material. I stopped going to see them for a few years because the setlists were just too predictable.
Or was a waitress who met a guy that smokes the same cigarettes. thankfully we both quit. happiness is just a moment or whatever
I wish Greg sang “to throw my fucking soul away” at the end of the recorded version of Gates like he does live
Big shame too, because they are such a tight live band. The perfect example that you don’t have to be sloppy to play hard / heavy.
Gates I love both songs, but the "it's not hard to fall for a waitress, when you both smoke the same cigarettes" verse is too good. Gotta go with Gates.
