I don't blame people for feeling a certain way when a privileged group takes language and slang terms from a minority group and overuse them, often use them incorrectly, and just hammer it into the ground and then like 6 months later we have to see 10,000 think pieces about why the term is no longer trendy or is so overused and dumb. Ends up being another aspect of someone else's culture that is just used and discarded. I know language evolves but we had to endure like a year of people incorrectly using "throwing shade" and still haven't learned
Yeah I still hurt a little bit every time I see someone use “drip” to describe like a cool shirt or something
Thanks for writing all this out, very informative and definitely gives perspective I didn't see. Especially looking at some of the stuff that the twitter account called out and imagining how those terms would be perceived from two different kinds of people. One question I have, do you think that the rise in prominence of hip hop to becoming THE biggest genre in the last 10 or so years has lessened that stigma of it sounding unprofessional at all? Like, is there any progress is to be seen in the younger generations and not seeing the certain dialect as being lesser than others? I guess what I am trying to get at is if Gen Z maybe has progressed way more than generations of 20 years ago, lets say.
Thanks for your reply as well, definitely feels like there's a lot of nuance and a lot of understanding to be had
I think the thing with Olivia was just cringe because I only see people type that stuff out. People don't normally talk like that out in the real world, or maybe I'm too old to notice lol. I don't really hang out with people in their teens or early twenties. Honestly, I don't know if I have an answer to your question. I think with younger people becoming more inclusive and spending time with people of different nationalities and races, they're going to pick up different ways to act, speak, dress, etc. In general though some things will always seem weird to me, like me or a white person wearing a sombrero, even though I have plenty of Mexican friends.
yeah someone speaking differently to the press and their friends on FaceTime seems pretty normal to me. again this level of scrutiny placed upon an 18 year old for something that quite frankly does not matter is ridiculous
Kind of glad I didn't end up ordering her merch because my for you page is people getting their merch and it looking different and a lot cheaper than advertised
Just buy two tickets and leave the seat next to you open and then tell people your kid ran to the restroom
I know this album hasn’t done a ton in physical sales, but it does seem like the vinyl is poised for a huge week. She might be battling Lorde for top sales next week.
I honestly always forget that VMAs are still a thing. But I'll for sure be checking out her performance. I can't believe vinyl release date is in 2 days! Feels like yesterday when I pre-ordered it.
Urgh my vinyl got a shipping delay, should be receiving it by Friday. The vinyl pre order numbers must've been crazy, because Sour is projected to hit #1 on the charts this week with 150k activity. Curious to find out how much of that is from physical sales.
My wife and I watched High School Music The Musical The Series this week and from it I would never have guessed that Olivia Rodrigo would release an album that sounds like SOUR. (We did love the cheese of the tv show though.)
