I agree! I see it all the time when it comes to Billie. Like, Billie didn’t blow up overnight, she’s been growing her fanbase for years. The conversation is most of the times always directed at young women as well, like we are not capable of being more than a pretty face.
I've heard it a lot with Clairo too but these artists didn't just wake up one day and be hugely successful. They worked and worked at their artistry to earn that recognition. Sure, someone like Olivia and other Disney stars may have had a leg up due to having prior recognition or a huge corporation name behind part of their career, but that doesn't negate their work ethic at all.
Bob Dylan borrowed from Woody Guthrie. The Beatles borrowed from Dylan. The Beach Boys made Pet Sounds because Rubber Soul inspired them. The Beatles made Sgt Pepper’s because The Beach Boys inspired them. Hendrix was influenced by Sgt Peppers. Bowie supposedly based part of Ziggy Stardust on Hendrix. Bowie’s glam inspired the New York Dolls. The Dolls inspired The Smiths. The Smiths inspired 00s emo. As Tall As Lions were 00s emo. Dan Nigro was in As Tall as Lions. Therefore Olivia Rodrigo is stealing from Woody Guthrie and kills fascists. Am I doing this exhausting pastime correctly?
As if the reason people like “Brutal” is because of the originality of the riff. Wait until you guys hear “Brain Stew”.
I mean, they literally used a sample of another song for “brutal.” EDIT: EDIT #2: Now I’m realizing that I think that song is actually sampling “Pump It Up” haha. I get it now.
I don't understand why anyone would even have a problem with her using her established fame to promote her music? Like who wouldn't? I would. If you've got it take advantage of it, getting your music noticed is hard.
Yeah that too. Is she just not allowed to make music because she was already an actress? I don't get it.
Any famous actor or actress must go into solitary hiding for 5 years, change their name and appearance, and move to another country before they are allowed to have a music career
Also, it’s not like she was all that “famous” before this year. The High School Musical show was not exactly the cultural phenomenon that the original was.
And she sings in the show. So I’d argue that she has always been more of a singer than actress anyway.
She also doesn't just sing in the show, she actually writes a bunch of the songs that she sings on the show.
This is the first Green Day song I ever heard and it was this version of it, cause my dad had this soundtrack on CD in his car. I credit Godzilla roaring to my interest in punk.
There’s another band on the soundtrack called Fuzzbubble who the lead singer became a nurse and worked with my mom haha
