Co wrote, produced the entire album. And basically is the one man band for the whole thing... songwriting (1–3, 5–6, 9–11), production (all tracks), recording (all tracks), electric guitar (1–2, 5–6), acoustic guitar (1–2, 5–7, 10), drum programming (1–3, 5–6, 8–9, 11), synthesizer (1, 3, 6, 8–9), backing vocals (1–3, 5–6, 8–9, 11), piano (2–3, 8–9), Juno 60 (2, 5, 7, 10), B3 organ (2), bass (3–10), percussion (3, 5), organ (4, 11), Wurlitzer (5), guitar (8–9), vocal arrangement (10), mixing (11)
He also co-wrote So Hot You’re Hurting my Feelings with Caroline Polacheck so you know he’s the real deal
Jesus. The songs are similar. It’s really not that deep. It was an off the cuff remark. There are key vocal inflections, melody, and structure that are present in both songs. It makes them very similar sounding. I’m not denigrating Olivia Rodrigo, it’s not a critique. I love the song and album. The first time I heard I went man this sounds a lot like misery business (which it does). That’s a statement on the sonic similarities, not a comment on the lyrics or storytelling. It’s influence, as people have said.
I'm not going to lie I'm a little furious at the dismissiveness in the music press of ATAL. This could have been a moment to shine a light on an overlooked band, but instead it's been "a former singer of an emo band" or Craig's "moody art rock", which might be worse.
I legit cannot stop listening to Good 4 U. Just an absolute monster of a song. And the "like a damn sociopath" line already feels iconic to me. Though I acknowledge my severe limitations in being able to predict what is and is not iconic.
I love all 3 singles way more now in context of the album than when they were standalones. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, but I'm finally understanding how massive "drivers license" really is as a song. I think so much of the punch comes from the lyrical content, which I admittedly never dug deep into before the album. It really does elevate the song much more than I initially thought. "deja vu" has grown on me massively and is probably my favorite song on here overall. "good 4 you" is great fun as well. Whole album is a damn impressive debut.
The three girls on my newspaper staff at work (I’m a teacher) cannot stop talking about her album and the hundred times they’ve already listened. Glad to know the hype is not just an internet phenomenon
I mean, you’re just lying to yourself haha. It’s similar, but I wouldn’t go as far as saying it’s the same exact song.
Jeeze, that’s a quality pull. Trying to think what I’d have pulled for that joke. Maybe “Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport”
