i’ve fallen intro industry plant discourse in the past, though usually regarding white alt rock men bands, but this seems so far from that. a disney channel 18 year old featuring music primarily written by and produced by a musician known for being unfairly skipped over most of his career. like. get real lol
At this point, she's the biggest musician to come from Disney Channel yeah? Miley would come close but that's it.
Idk maybe Miley doesn’t have the ~numbers~ but I would consider her to be bigger than Olivia by a wide margin if not even solely based on longevity as an artist
I mean, Drivers License alone has done more than everything Selena and Demi put out (as far as I am aware, could be wrong), so I was mainly going off just that song tbh. Miley probably does have her beat though.
Fair, but I'd argue maintaining a very successful career for 10+ years carries more weight than having one wildly successful song/album. If she can keep this momentum up, though, then yeah she has a very real claim to that title
Eh, the metrics around DL don’t really compare to decade+ careers. Miley, Selena and Demi are household names for like my parents. A reasonable convo can be had in a few years
You would also need to factor in Selena having an HBO Max show, a Hulu show, and being the co lead in Hotel Transylvania
Yeah there’s no world in which she’s as big as Demi, Selena and Miley off an album. Give the girl time
Yeah, I wouldn’t say she’s as big as Selena, Miley, or Demi, but I could see her getting there, especially if she ends up opening for Taylor since I can imagine a lot of parents will be there since Taylor’s fanbase is very wide ranging. Olivia, along with Billie and Dua, are going to be the big “next generation” pop stars for the kids today (it’s hard for me to phrase because I’m fairly young haha but I hope you all get what I mean!)
Nah, she's not going to get close to that, and I'd honestly be surprised if any artist ever crosses that threshold again, at least with how these things are calculated currently. You really need some crazy high actual sales numbers to get near that million mark. Looks like Hits Daily Double is projecting 60-70k sales and somewhere in the 195-220k range for total units. It sounds like that's probably a slight underestimate, but I'd bet somewhere in the 200-300k territory is likely. (For comparison, folklore did 846,000 in week one, with 615,000 coming from proper sales.)
Ah, gotcha! When I saw the tweet earlier from chart data, I was out shopping so I thought it was U.S., but probably was globally she’s done 500K. At the end of the day, she’s still exceeding farther than a lot of people probably expected when driver’s license first came out, and for that, I’m proud of her!
I seem to recall Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears being Disney stars as well.
Also Zendaya, Efron, Ariana, the Jonas Brothers (kind of), and Ryan Gosling. Edit: Forgot that Ari's show was Nickelodeon.
She's definitely not going to be a one-hit wonder, that's for sure! Yep, good call on that. It really shows the power of actual sales, versus streaming. Obviously, her sales numbers are nothing to scoff at, but she's probably going to fall well short of the biggest sales week of the year (Taylor, with Fearless) which made it to 291k off the strength of 179k sales.
