I’m possibly heading to Target today since I’m out shopping, so if I see it I’ll pick it up! I don’t have an aux chord in my car, so definitely want the CD
A bunch of people I follow on Twitter are bitching about her encroaching on indie artist space, saying she's an industry plant. What's up with that? How can a Disney channel star be a plant? Also, damn, good 4 u really does sound like Misery Business.
Industry plant discourse is so insufferable at this point. And the idea that you can like, appropriate indie or whatever people are trying to say is so absurd and a big part of why turning indie into an adjective for sound has muddied the waters
The funny thing is, the people complaining work in very niche genres that wouldn't be at all affected by her music anyway. It's not like an ambient field recording noise artist is going to lose sales to Olivia Rodrigo. Just elitism I guess.
It feels like so often all this is aimed at young women/girls as well. When folklore came out I was really stoked thinking about how many people who might not have heard of The National were going to potentially discover them. It’s elitism laced with sexism and I’m apparently very fired up over it this morning!
Olivia is just making the kind of music she enjoys. Yes, she’s a bigger name, but that isn’t a bad thing. If she incorporates an “indie” sound into her music, her younger fans that aren’t well versed into the genre might check it out and find other, smaller artists. She isn’t trying to steal anyone’s paycheck lol. People who think that must not have anything more serious to be mad about.
it's so misogynistic and undercuts the real problem which is that rich people have connections that normal people don't have
Feel like this discourse is going to get more and more insufferable because all these new artists grew up on these “indie” sounds, it’s not cosplay or whatever it’s just what they like. Also the biggest pop album of the year using guitars is not going to make your album sell any less copies lmao I can’t imagine thinking “I love the new Olivia album soooo much that I’m not going to stream a single album with guitars for the rest of the year”
If anything pop music going in this direction increases the likelihood indie/rock bands start to break through more. If anything, it keeps a band like Paramore more relevant and I'm pretty psyched for it all. As for everything else in the social media sphere there's just always reason for hatred, people want to whine but I hear overwhelmingly positive from this album.
