I've heard conflicting things about singles over the years. I'm not sure how they function for first-week sales nowadays!
It’s true! The singles will count toward certifying the album as gold/platinum, but they have nothing to do with first week sales
Yeah we’re all jaded as hell, why do you think we’ve been discussing sales for three pages straight? PS @Drew Beringer get your guess in.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Chart Units - SPS total counted starting from the album’s release date. This means that units racked up by singles released prior to the album are not included in this count. Only audio streaming is counted. Total Project – SPS total of the entire album era including pre-album tracks in addition to the album SPS from the release date. Only audio streaming is counted.
Damn, I did not realize that! Has it always been that way for the streaming charts? I could have sworn “Hotline Bling” or some similar song had enough streams to get Drake to number one before the album even came out.

It could be you're thinking about it going platinum before coming out, but I am pretty certain this has been the way it's done for a while. Last change I remember was in 2018, where they changed some of the weighting: Billboard Finalizes Changes to How Streams Are Weighted for Billboard Hot 100 & Billboard 200. I could be remembering everything wrong at this point though
