The tik tok influence IMO on music is the desire to have a catchy little one liner or quote that can go viral on TikTok when isolated in a short clip. They plan for tiktok trend moments in songs now.
I only did one listen, but the song still sticking with me the most is Love is Embarrassing. What great hooks/vocal 'tricks' she's doing there, and the a lot of the lyrics wouldn't be out of place on an early/mid 2000s emo song
Like, very easy to imagine Adam lazarra/Matt Skiba or Dan Andriano/Chris Carrabba/ JL/etc etc etc singing the "watch as I crucify myself" line lol
Also waiting for the internet to start talking about what the cadence in the verses/drums on Get Him Back remind them of and accuse her of "ripping off" that song too even though there's really not a similarity there
yeah I'm not gonna lie, I find "get him back!" to be actively grating, but the rest of this continues to grow on me lol love the record as a whole
Haha I was thinking between the drums and cadence Loser, but then I also heard a little bit of No Rest for the Wicked. But it's not nearly close enough for anyone to accuse her of ripping them off like the internet loves to do.
Haha, I don't think she's ripping anyone off. I hadn't even thought of "Loser" and I love that song. But when she does the "...He'd just fly me to France!" bit especially, I totally hear this Weird Al classic.
I find none of these songs annoying because I have taste. But, “get him back!” isn’t in the top half of this album’s songs for me or one I’d go out of my way to hear when hand selecting songs. And yeah, Beck in rap mode was the first thing it reminded me of for sure. Very similar general vibe, imo.
I don't dislike the song, exactly, but the chorus has worn on me on repeat listens. I've definitely skipped past it a few times. In general, I think that section of the album ("Lacy" through "Logical") is a tad weaker than the opening trio or the last five songs.
“Lacy” is also great, probably the first song I’d bring up if I felt like being contrarian about the ballads being lesser. I think the first five tracks on here are all great, and after that it becomes less even (but still never bad).
I think I prefer SOUR but this is really good too. Maybe a tiny twinge of disappointment but that’s ok. She’s exciting. The best songs here are fantastic.
Listened to this in full a bunch of times this weekend. Looks like Aaron and I are the only two who can't really stand Get Him Back. That and Bad Idea Right are my least favorite. Still the album is super solid, might even surpass Sour (time will tell). Lacy and Pretty Isnt Pretty are far and away my favorites on here.
Get Him Back and Bad Idea Right are by far my two favorites lol. Won’t mind at all when I hear them in every store I go to for the next two years.
I think the spoken word stuff on "Bad Idea Right" is way easier to listen to, but it doesn't hurt that the chorus is excellent
"Bad Idea Right?" is probably the best banger on here. That song goes and spanks and rips and slaps and etc.
Lacy is the only one of the ballads that hasn't grown on me. Really came around on The Grudge the past few listens.
