Catch all for asking for recs about genres, directors, actors etc. I have John Cassavetes's Criterion box set. Where do I start?
Good thread idea. First you should spell his name right; it is Cassavetes. Once you are done, Husbands is a really good introduction.
Start with his debut or A Woman Under the Influence. Opening Night is the best film in the set though.
Bump. Anyone interested in putting together primers of specific genres? (Spaghetti Westerns, French New Wave etc.) I think it'd be a decent place to collect lists for how people can get into certain genres or directors' works.
Need to get into Billy Wilder Also La La Land and Debbie Reynolds passing has gotten me to want to check out some old Hollywood musicals
Have you seen any Wilder? Sunset Boulevard is my absolute favorite. Some Like It Hot and The Apartment are obvious choices. Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are a great pair of noirs.
The Apartment and Sabrina are his masterpieces. He was very good with drama (Double Indeminty, The Lost Weekend, Ace in the Hole, Sunset Boulevard), but other people did drama as well as he did. His particular brand of dramatic comedy, however, is so beautifully his own.
Hah he's definitely one of my favorite directors. I've only seen 15 of his, but I think I have most of his major stuff.
