Curry Barker did get the idea because he saw the Monkeys Paw Treehouse of Horror Parody on The Simpsons so that tracks
Some of y'all would struggle with Funny Games or Killing of a Sacred Deer if you think this one is bleak (I don't blame you)
I love Funny Games. Don't get me wrong I like sick shit I think I was just trying to figure out if it was an earned ending or not.
Nah, I just mean the general sentiment of people not liking how dark this went, which is totally valid. I think the decision to go for it paired with how absurd it is really makes for a potent combination, but I'm surprised to see how strong some of the less positive reactions are just based on how horror is and can be a lot of the time.
Love both of those movies I also thought the ending of this was great. I even awkwardly laughed out loud because it was so absurd and fucked up. Maybe it’s the hype but I do plan on rewatching this because my opinion of it has definitely increased since I saw it and I’m wondering if watching it not-sober was a bad idea because as I’ve said, I found parts of it viscerally upsetting (the self harm, the visual of him fucking her, her begging him to kill her, for example) and that was the overwhelming feeling I walked away with; it just hit unexpectedly hard (in part for personal reasons) and even though I found a lot of the movie hilarious in the best kind of twisted way it didn’t make me feel good at all, haha.
The death scene in the car is maybe one of my favorite horror moments in recent memory. You knew what was coming the entire conversation and when it did it was so quick and so brutal and so unpleasant. You just felt unwell after, which for a horror movie is exactly the feeling you’re looking for haha
It was completely heartbreaking but also completely avoidable and just reflects even worse on the main character. They did a good job of making me care about Samantha. The scene was "earned," in a weird way.
I still say that it makes no sense why she would invite Bear to a midnight van talk after seeing that Nikki is completely off her rocker.
I haven't seen anyone ask this question... why did the hospital turn them away? That made no sense given what happened.
Probably figured her asleep was the only opportunity to get away for a moment. Also I guess she didn’t fully know the extent of how bad it was like the audience and Bear did
Probably just me? But my brain made the immediate leap that the hospital wanted to take her alone in case it was domestic violence and she wouldn't go anywhere without him.
You can't just bring someone to a psychiatric hospital against their will. He would have needed to have her remanded there legally or medically or under her own recognizance which obviously wouldn't have happened. That's a good thing because women used to be sent to these places against their will by their husbands when their wives were tired of being mistreated and began making a fuss about it.
I didn’t assume he was taking her for psych treatment, more for medical treatment due to the bleeding glass wounds all over her face. But I guess regardless, yeah you can’t really admit someone by force.
oddly enough, the one thing that grossed me out wasn't the headsmashy car scene but rather the shit all over her shirt when he comes back from work
in interviews they talk about how they took inspiration from Pearl, which, yeah, i can definitely see that in Inde's performance. I also saw similarities to Talk to Me (specifically the party scene vibe just being incredibly awkward, tho not so terribly violent) and Get Out (does she go to the sunken place?) they also mentioned going for not so much a jumpscare but rather this uncanny creepy feeling you get when she moves weird, like the entity controlling her doesn't entirely know how to human properly. ppl kept mentioning a scene where she walked backwards and i couldn't remember what that looked like but then i found a clip and yeah it's super fucking creepy
This was great but made me feel bad. Bear is such a piece of shit. Feel like I knew I was in for a treat when she first turns and says “my cat died” I was confused for a second. Hearing the real Nikki during the customer service call made me feel ill
