And to be fair, their family business was on the verge of take over, all their horses were being eaten by a monster. Let them get some cash for a photo of this fucking thing that is ruining their lives
I also (personally) feel it's less about exploitation of animals specifically and more about exploiting things beyond our control, which we have done throughout history and continue to do despite the consquences And while that overarching theme is there, I root for the characters not only because they're well-constructed and likable, but because they're carrying a legacy for their distant relative who never got the credit he truly deserved
Thought this was great. Excellent work from Hoyte van Hoytema as always. Whole cast was great. Peele crafter some truly memorable sequences for this. There are so many blockbusters I watch that, even if I enjoy them, I never think about again a few months later. Peele's movies always leave a lasting impression. Be it a line, a concept, or a visual, I still make references to his movies years later. I appreciate that.
i thought they were pretty undeveloped, there’s not a lot to grab on to, especially kaluuya’s character. I didn’t really feel any tension because I felt like I knew next to nothing about these people and their motivations are so low stakes. I would also say that the constant jokes really undercut a lot of potentially tense or serious moments.
why do ppl feel like kaluuya’s character has nothing to grab onto. he’s the richest one there. clearly dealing with the grief over his dad’s sudden death and feeling ill-equipped to take over the family business. i find it so compelling
yeah he’s grieving but also seems like he doesn’t want to actually continue the business but also wants to because of his dad and the family legacy. There’s so much depth to his character.
Hmmm. Agree to misagree, especially about the humor. I think there was plenty of back story to understand OJ's motivations and that he had complex emotions about the failure of his family's business. I loved the siblings' dynamic and the supporting cast was fun. All things that kept me interested in how these characters would react to the extraordinary circumstances.
man... OJ has to take care of everything. He's named after his father. He watches his father die. He inherits a failing business with his name on it that he's been prepped to take over for his entire life ...and it kind of seems like he doesn't want it but doesn't have a choice. Did we watch the same movie?
Yeah I also didn’t find OK to be a shallow character at all. Maybe we’re just kinda broken by the trend movies have of just drowning us with exposition lol
Just want to say I also found Kaluuya at the beginning to be very mumbly. I think as the character gained confidence and the movie went on, it got better. But I had a tough time figuring out what he was saying at times in that first hour.
I think Alonso Duralde (a critic I like and admire, but disagree with here) agreed on the problems you have too: https://www.thewrap.com/nope-film-review-jordan-peele-2022-keke-palmer-daniel-kaluuya/
I was the only one in my theater laughing at the whole Chris Kattan bit. I still can't tell if it was making fun of him or not but I was dying
The tone was so serious during that monologue that I can't tell if it was meant to be ridiculous but my friend and I were cracking up when he threw Kattan into the mix
that scene was so simultaneously uncomfortable and hilarious, only sent home by the brief flashback it’s juxtaposed with. it’s like the opposite of undercutting an emotional moment with a joke
I did a "Leo point at the screen meme" when the fish restaurant was called Copperpot's. Love a Goonies reference.
Yeah, in relation to the whole “spectacle” theme, it’s a great replication of how often real horrible, traumatic things that happen to real people are turned into entertainment for everyone except the person it happened to. The desensitization to tragedy and all that
Personally, I think the whole movie is about how fucked up Mark Wahlberg is for that stupid Boston marathon bombing movie lol
had to get my phone fixed so i caught this again when i was waiting. just as much of a thrill the second viewing
I think this is going to be a grower. Impossible to unpack on first viewing. Maybe the best film of year?
