I definitely don’t think this is the sort of movie you can really criticize someone for misinterpreting/misunderstanding. Get out, sure. This one, not so much

I think my favorite horror movies operate on nightmare logic, and all 3 of Peele's films 100% do that.

Personally I found this to be his most disturbing film yet. That sequence when the crowd gets eaten and we follow them inside the creature. Fuck.

Yeah like there’s a house half a mile away that’s covered in blood lol. When like 50 people go completely missing you’d think way more people would be asking what’s up

I got the impression that people don't just like...randomly drive by their ranch since it's like...a ranch with massive acreage lol

Also this was shot like 20 minutes from where I grew up so I was predisposed to like it. Shout out to the 14 fwy cameo.

Do we know how long passed between the crowd getting abducted and the final shot with all the press?

if it’s just one night it makes sense that the press/paparazzi/police arrive the next day after that many people are reported missing, if there’s no survivors having a delay would make sense, no one is calling for help in the moment.

I think the guy on the bike is a good indication that people are coming, also puts them on a timer because someone else can steal their proof (the bike guy’s character name is the same as the filmmaker who made the first film with a horse and jockey that their ancestor got no credit for).

  7. I watched a video that said the film takes place over the span of six months but I didn't feel that when watching

  8. Can't remember if I (or anyone else) already mentioned this but I was really surprised when the bike guy literally just ended up being a weirdo bike guy/potential reporter. I thought the TMZ line was a joke. He seemed...not human, or maybe government or something. Idk. Dude was weird right up until getting eaten lol

6 months? No way. I mean, from the death of Otis Sr to the end? Sure. But the events we see are in now way over six months.

didnt oj say 'we have two days, three max' when they were talking about taming jean jacket? something like that? so i assume it was like ingonito said, a day or 2

  11. I do think Jupe said something about it visiting for months during his show, but who knows if that's exaggeration or even if he just noticed it before OJ and Em.

Keith David opening happens, then a six month time jump, then the whole movie takes place over a few days/nights.

We have no idea how long the craft was there, six months has got to be the minimum, lines up with what Jupe was saying as well.

Their dad died 6 months before the main action so it's like...6 months and a week I think.

Realize I'm now like the 8th person to answer this haha

A lot of impressions online seem to be harping on how direct/straightforward this is, like it's completely out of left field for Peele. Was Get Out really that abstruse? It had impressive twists and a fresh concept for sure, but even at the time I remember it being fairly straightforward, not much more or less than a lot of Black Mirror episodes or thrillers like The Sixth Sense and Funny Games. US leaned into the abstract and allegorical a lot more I think.

  16. I think Get Out being "straightforward" is a little revisionist history, in the sense that after a film has been around for years and people hear about the premise, it might be easier to digest than it was in theaters with no idea what to expect. Not saying it was difficult to follow or anything, but the twist was so radical and unexpected that I think there was plenty to chew on thematically and discuss after the fact, to the point where you will absolutely notice things you didn't on first watch.

As an example of how much I think he nailed the aesthetics, feel, and natural lighting of the area, I kept thinking of this photo from Matt Oswalt whenever I looked at the original poster and then again while watching the movie.

The movie essentially takes place to the right and over those foothills.

"More direct/straightforward" vs Get Out could also be that there's no real deeper social element to the plot (loosely, but I don't think it's as integral to "understanding" the movie as it is with Get Out).

Like, Get Out has single lines that have heavier/deeper social commentary than this entire movie imo

I actually still haven't seen Us and might watch tonight...

True, but even in Get Out he's still hitting you over the head with the themes even before you realize the twist and where the plot is going, so in that sense it's straightforward. Then after you realize what's going on there's still so much to go back and re-examine through that lense. Same with this, and that's why I enjoy his stuff so much.

Even though you might think it was radical for the time - and I'd agree it was a fresh take on the psychological thriller with effective/good twists - when I think of Peele's more abstract and abstruse stories I think of movies like US and how its horror premise compared to Get Out's left you with so many more questions than answers. So perhaps both direct and/or abstruse messaging is something to be expected of anything he does including big budget summer event films.

If the message of this movie is about exploiting animals, hollywood, and how we're all obsessed with spectacle and want to make money off viral videos why should we like or care about any of these characters? The whole story is that they want to take a picture of the UFO for money.

I like the idea that it’s about the dark side of Hollywood. During the opening credits we see inside the monster and then the images of the first motion picture of a black man on a horse. Was the monster born during the birth of Hollywood?

It gets in to the mistreatment of animals, marginalized groups of people and child actors - Hollywood (and the monster) chews them up and spits them out.

The industry encourages people to always go for the perfect shot at any cost. This idea is funnier and stronger now that Logan Paul of all people missed that point.

Of course the only way to stop a monster in Hollywood is with absolute proof - an unaltered image. And maybe, make some money off it while you are at it
