I believe subtitles should be on everything. But I didn’t have any issues here.

edit: this is a really ironic/funny(?) comment in consideration of our conversation a few days ago, talking about how frequently we agree about movies :crylaugh:

Seems like a hard movie to hate. Find the last one infinitely more polarizing than this.

uuuuhhhhh well, since you asked...here’s a copy and paste of the spoiler-heavy rant that I vomited out for a friend on Facebook yesterday:

so, it's all built on a fairly clever premise and theme. the premise is that the UFO doesn't contain aliens -- the UFO actually IS the alien. Okay, so far so good. The theme is taming animals -- or as one flashback succinctly states it, "Some animals can't be tamed." And that's all fine and dandy. Combining those two together is interesting, the idea that this alien could never be tamed, no matter how hard we try, and placing this all within the context of Hollywood animal trainers, is rife with possibilities for a cool movie.... possibilities that this doesn't capitalize on AT ALL. The only good thing about this movie is its wasted potential. Every detail about its execution fell wildly flat for me. The plot is stuffed with contrivances and leaps in logic. The whole thing looks kinda ugly, despite having solid cinematography. The characters are generally unlikeable if not outright insufferable, with some of them making ridiculously stupid decisions toward the end. And it infuriated me that Em was effectively handed the entire climax, defeating the alien and getting the photographic evidence simultaneously, after spending so much of the film refusing to do any work and being plainly rude to OJ (who was the only character I liked). There were plenty of inconsistencies with the rules of the creature (how strong it's sucking gust is, whether it turns off the electronics or not, how fast it can fly, etc.). And for a film written and directed by a famous comedian, it was downright shocking how unfunny it was, with nearly every single joke falling flat or falling within the awkward territory of not being clear whether it was supposed to be funny or not. In my theater, a few jokes earned light chuckles at best. I honestly didn't enjoy a single moment of it and felt cheated by a handful of cheap, misleading jump scares alongside a plodding, aimless plot with bad characters spouting bad dialogue.

there's no way Jupiter's Claim/Star Lasso Experience was profitable enough for how much OJ was getting for those horses/how much he offered for the ranch, I mean thank god there were a lot of empty seats because of the weather obviously
I know he made his money from the memorabilia and those delicious looking Icees

  7. I quite liked Us, actually. But Peele’s definitely on a downward trajectory, in my opinion

  8. hahhha I definitely had the thought that $11,500 was a ridiculous price to pay for a horse that would be used for a single event that only thirty people attended :crylaugh:

I’ve enjoyed all his films for different reasons but I felt like I had more “issues” or questions with Us than this (more than likely due to the more direct nature of the film). I could see someone being underwhelmed by this film but I was surprised to hear such a strong negative reaction.

  10. Man. I have no idea how you could not find this movie at least sporadically funny, let alone find the characters insufferable. I don't even know if I liked this as much as some people in here but if someone told me in-person that the film looked ugly, I would probably suggest they get their eyes checked lol

  11. I mean, I probably do need to get my eyes checked, or at least get a new pair of lenses, hahhaha

I’m not about to go around saying Hoyte van Hoytema is a bad cinematographer or anything. I’ve liked plenty of his work, Her and Ad Astra especially, and I recognize that his camera work here was all solid. I just didn’t enjoy the grey/brown color tone of it all, I didn’t care for a handful of the visual decisions for the alien, and the scenes that tried to lean into the western genre (visually or musically) didn’t work for me.

Peele is 3 for 3 for me. I liked Us a lot and am surprised to see how much hate it’s gotten in the years since

The movie has objectively funny moments and characters. It’s fine if you didn’t like it! Truly. But your assessment is booty and wrong

Em only made fun of OJ because if your brother has a flip phone and apparently only feels comfortable around horses it's your duty to make fun of him

  19. well I appreciate this comment far more than your first, which was a full dismissal that didn’t interact with any of my points.

I’m not sure if “objectively funny” is a real thing, though. You’re potentially referring to a handful of moments that left my entire theater in a stupor of not even being sure if a line was supposed to be funny or not.

Loved the movie. A few comments and questions:

I don’t remember the opening text / verse that well just. Just something about a beast or devil. Wish I could go back and read it.

The thing on the camera was definitely an alien. But they made a comment about not seeing praying mantises for some time and there’s no way that was a praying mantis but I know there was something more there that I must have missed out on.

There’s audio that mentions missing hikers I think? I can’t think of what would have been playing the audio though
