Of all the great parts of that sketch, for some reason what always gets me is Key staring at the camera before the Shining reveal lol
They just feel related to me, I thought I was supposed to be thinking that, surprised it wasn't the prevailing thought. So now I'm rehtinking everything.
Also, Gordy reacting could have been influenced by Jean jacket. But the shoe being upright because of him doesn’t really make sense. Unless he rips off the roof, nothing in the studio would physically be moved. I can’t recall anything being left in a weird position that was inside a building. Am I forgetting something? All the random stuff sticking up was from falling from Jean jacket as I guess his poop? Or discarding things he can’t digest?
Walking out of the theater i felt kinda cold on this, but there’s some stuff to dig into and think on that i think is fun.
OJ and his damn flip phone, I was like, Wait what year is this and then Frys (RIP, I used to go to that particular location all the time), I was like, Wait what year is this
I also want to give a shout out to the CGI in this movie. It’s done right. Perfect use. Looks great. Jean Jacket is pretty stunning and the action sequences are jaw dropping. Also: Jean Jacket, incredible “villain” name.
Absolutely loved this, still need to gather my thoughts. Gordy definitely didn't have anything to do with Jean Jacket literally, only thematically.
the gordy part is my least favorite. it’s well done but seems unnecessary/they could have gotten across the point better with something more connected to the plot but yeah the creature design is truly unlike anything i’ve seen ever/it’s stunning
This was so damn fun. Am I crazy or was there like, zero smart phone usage in the movie at all? Can’t think of a single character looking at one. Feels like that has to tie into the themes of “capturing the moment” and how we turn life into spectacle.
Possibly. It’s my personal taste/opinion, but I do not feel like social media or smart phones (ie texting bubbles) have ever been integrated properly into a movie yet, it’s usually aesthically off putting, looks at odds with the rest of the frame. I’m trying to rack my brain for a time when I was like “oh that really works”.
I was giddy the entire second half. wish there was more to the Gordy stuff as well. Not a big fan of Jean Jackets design tbh. A little slow to start. Only negatives I can think of though! keke is mfing perfection.
New number 1 for the year for me. Saw it in Dolby, will probably try to see it again in IMAX. Loved it. Incredible final act.
Man. Really enjoyed this. I wasn't sold in the first act and there are still some things that I'm thinking about, but that honestly makes me admire it even more. Everything is so instant satisfaction and needing to have a definitive take these days, it's really nice to see a movie that's so ambitious that I respect it as a whole, even when not every single piece works perfectly for me. Honestly, that's also how I feel about Us (and why I also like that film so much) - I think it's kinda crazy that someone could love this but not that film because it really seems to be Peele's calling card at this point. Big, thematic stuff that isn't exactly concerned with logistics but riddled with symbolism and impressive details/connections.
Anyways, yeah, the pacing worked for me (picked up just when it needed to), everyone in this showed up and turned in great performances. The nighttime photography and cinematography when following the creature in disc form was incredible. The people inside the creature was an example of a truly horrifying moment in a film that I otherwise wouldn't consider a horror movie. Twist was a little hmmmm to me at first, but the third act whipped so much ass. Wildly funny, too, as expected. Addressing some specific stuff in this thread, the fake out rocked and I like the shoe as a bad miracle explanation. The Gordy stuff in general worked for me even though the CGI (just Gordy) was a little uncanny valley. Pretty minor complaints, once things clicked they really clicked and I think my second watch (hopefully in theaters) will be even better. Really ambitious and admirable stuff from Peele once again
I feel like he should have made a few more movies before tackling the idea of Us if that makes any sense.
