Very disappointing overall, especially considering how she seems to be a spokesperson for a lot of sociopolitical issues, I really expected more from her
Excusing the Adolf Spitler line is crazy because it's coming from an antisemite...like, if a known racist person made a racist joke, you wouldn't be like, "It's just a joke! Don't be so outraged!"
I mean, it's got to be a bummer if you make art related to your experience as a POC and then don't see people like yourself digesting it or reflected in your crowds
I'm like, vaguely less hyped for this ever since her antics with Jay Electronica but am still expecting quality.
This would probably be my immediate aoty if she hadn’t put a known antisemite on it and then had such a shitty attitude when challenged. It’s right in line with the quality of her previous two and sonically would almost work as a bridge between them She is (was?) my favorite living emcee, but I’m positive once the “new Noname!” effect wears off I probably won’t feel like returning much. Really really resent not only her decision, but also that the controversy will always be married to this record in my mind
It reallyyyyy sucks about the jay feature because otherwise this album is superb. What a shitty and harmful decision and it’s a bummer that at best noname is indifferent to antisemitism; and his feature really leans into it which makes its inclusion all the more troubling.
You weren't kidding. Kind of annoying that the Pitchfork article boils things down to "We're all inconsistent people," which is true, but I wouldn't consider antisemitism a moral inconsistency of myself or anyone I associate with
Listening now, and it's definitely tainted for me. I can't connect to it like the previous albums with the relief of an unburdened listen. But it's technically good stuff. I just don't understand why she defended herself the way she did to the criticism. Doubling down on the "white fans" thing. It's just embarrassing.
This is excellent but I don’t know how often I will return to it because of the Jay inclusion and her bullshit defense of his inclusion.
