NOFX are over rated and boring other than like one album. Always seemed like a band filled with dickheads. Glad to see the brewery's response was so cool though.
Sure, it was a bad joke and it would be better if he didn't say it. I just can't understand how people can get this upset over it. Other than if you've hated the band for a long time and this fans your flames. If it would have been a written joke and part of a routine, then sure, but if it was said in the heat of the moment I just can't bring myself to care more than "Well, that was unnecessary. You fucked up, but we all do from time to time. Apologise and then we'll all move on".
I don't think they're losing fans over this. They'll always have a new batch of kids coming out to see them because they're considered a pinnacle of punk rock. It's the same reason how a lot of those ancient bands (I'm looking at you, The Adicts) can still tour 30 years after they've peaked. The 16 year olds that want to witness what their parents did when they were young.
Okay, that I can understand. I realise now that it's probably a lot more upsetting for you people in the US that has dealt with shootings like those for a long time. So far, we've been spared of shootings here in Sweden which probably is why I'm not taking this the same way.
Can we not use this as an opportunity to talk about their music, this has nothing to do with that. No one should use this as an opportunity to say well this band sucked anyway.. This discussion should be about holding the band accountable for their actions. I hope they come up with a sincere apology, but I’m glad that they are facing immediate consequences for what they said.
Imagine having that audience, that reach. You can say anything and have so many people pay attention to it. They can share any thought or idea and have it reach millions of people. Then they use it to make a joke about a mass shooting.
I was in the crowd for their set. It was a rough moment when they made that comment, and they were booed by a lot of people around me. It was not the most offensive comment they made though, so I guess it's interesting that this one went viral and nobody cares about the other ones.
This band had seemed to actually have developed a (very ) small amount of maturity over just the past couple years (post-kick to the head). But I see they really haven't changed even in the slightest. What a shame that entertainers and people in general continue to use violence as their punchlines. Show some class.
"There’s no place here to backpedal. What NOFX said in Vegas was shameful. We crossed the line of civility. We can’t write songs about how people in this world need to be more decent, when we were clearly being indecent. Las Vegas has always been a welcoming city to our band, and to make light of the tragedy that occurred there was egregious. All members of the band would like to sincerely apologize to anyone who experienced loss from the Vegas shooting 8 months ago, and to anyone who was at our show who lost a loved one or a friend, or who had to witness the incredibly senseless violence that night. We were asked why we didn’t release an immediate apology. Well, we didn’t feel that we could write a sincere apology without reflecting on the actual damage we had done. No press agent was gonna write this for us. That’s why we have struggled with this for the past few days. We didn’t plan or intend on saying anything so insensitive. It was off the cuff, but just as hurtful. We won’t blame it on drugs or alcohol or Ambien. That’s too easy. NOFX said it, and we own it. We made a tasteless joke. But to be clear, NOFX does not condone violence against ANY group of people, period! As sincere as we’ve ever been, NOFX"
... i laughed.... Eric Melvin's comment was just a bit of dark humor and Fat Mike's reply was a shitty attempt to join in on the joke. Dark humor has it's pros and cons. It helps tons of people deal with terrible situations and feelings. Darker jokes helped me emotionally deal with some serious medical issues I've faced. With that said..... saying this in front of such a large crowd was a pretty bad call
I've seen them say something fucked up everytime I've seen them. I hope they can learn a thing or two from this.
