Trying to put a woman or a person of color in the role is just a way to try and minimize the very sexist and racist history of the character and the franchise.
While I've been fully onboard with the idea of Idris Elba being a Bond, I've had somewhat mixed feelings about the general idea of changing the gender or race of a character. It's different in say, the case of Sam Wilson being Captain America, because he's not just a random person, and it allows the exploration of both what it means for him specifically to be Cap and what it means to him to take up the mantle from Steve. But just randomly altering things seems to me like a disservice, like it's saying we can't create a comparable character without having that brand name value attached to it to get people invested. That said, and like with the Cap example, I'm behind it if it leads to interesting storytelling and helps re-examine and enrich the character to put it under that microscope.
i don't think there is a remote chance you ever see a non-white, non-male james bond. that's not to say i would not be fully behind it, though there are good points raised here about why maybe it should not necessarily happen, i just don't think it ever will.
I think there's a good chance Bond is played by a non-white actor at some point, perhaps even next. I think it's extremely unlikely they ever cast a non-cis male in the role, though. Also as much as I love Idris Elba he's too old for the role now.
It’s the idea that everything has to connect with something that has come before and the only thing worth anything is pre-existing IP, something that Marvel fully brought into 90% of Hollywood with the MCU.
I feel like you're giving Marvel way too much credit here, cause Hollywood has thought this way far before the MCU began. I mean, the only reason Blofeld appeared in Spectre is because they finally got the rights to use the character again. I don't know if Dr. No was in a similar situation, but if it was, then I totally see why they would leap at the chance to use him.
I’m not attached to the older bond films so being called doctor no or doctor shitbag makes no difference to me haha
I’d prefer him not be dr no but it feels pretty obvious. I’m just hoping for a good send off honestly.
Yeah i mean, Spectre…Blofeld…it was heading in this direction. I’m not opposed to a newer take on the villain.
It would be wild to go in that direction after how much everyone hated spectre tho, and the way it was so obvious Waltz was Blofeld.
Also dr no has no real name recognition to the general public. It just seems like such a WEIRD choice to make.
