Just saw it tonight. That was phenomenal. Best comedy of the decade by far. My jaw literally dropped when TND showed up. Unexpected surprise
One of my favorite lines was when Matt was chatting with the French tourist while trying to plug in the cable and he says “you think this is funny, but my life depends on this!” He is an improv master
Another bit I loved was flashbacks being exaggerated and extra lines being thrown in on each one. I was dying during the flashback where Jay asked about traveling back two days prior and went, “I spilled some wine on my pants. I may have murdered someone.”
That apartment scene is just some masterful editing and (I assume) having the exact right footage to slot into the movie. It’s seamless.
They've said in interviews the editors collected the footage first and then wrote around it, but also they had mountains of footage
I think on Stavvy’s world podcast Matt said it was Jay’s idea to use the old footage and make it a time travel movie.
Stavvys was too long for me but they were talking bout how they started filming 2 other version of the movies and scraped them before making this version One was a road trip movie where they trying to use make up to look younger but then it looked ridiculous next to the old footage so they stopped trying an pivoted to a time travel movie where looking older was a narrative strength Sounded like old footage was always going to be used though
