Ohhhhh, I'm sorry. I totally read your post like you were requesting it of Nintendo, and I'm like "revive? But it already was?" I should sleep.
Jeeze, Nintendo has been having games leak super early lately. I wonder what the source of their leaks are haha. Echoes of Wisdom, Mario Party Jamboree, and now Mario & Luigi Brothership all leaked two weeks early haha
Nintendo closed the studio that Sakurai made specifically for the game a few months after it's release, so they either don't care for the franchise to keep it open or didn't like the initial sales
It has to be Smash Bros. Nintendo will have a new smash bros for the next Switch. It's unavoidable. I don't trust anyone else making a smash bros game and I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo doesn't either. Sakurai claims Nintendo is the one that requested the game. Would not be surprised at all if they told him to start on the next iteration of Smash for Switch 2. It's the definition of a system seller.
Nintendo hiring the director of one of their biggest franchises of all time to make another iteration for their next console which has happened the previous 5 consoles with the same director doesn't make sense? A Smash Bros game has always released within 2 years of a new console's launch ever since the gamecube. Why would the Switch 2 be any different?
I’m not saying they can’t, I would just be surprised if he did given how adamant he was talking about wanting to be done with the series.
tbh, if the next console has backwards compatibility and/or free next gen graphics upgrades for Switch titles (as has been previously rumored), i really don't see a reason to release another for a good while. the base game would run really well on a new system, and aside from a few stages, the trophy/sticker mechanic, and a few game modes, it has pretty much everything from its predecessors (and so much more to the point of near overkill).
Best case scenario imo would be porting Ultimate to Switch 2 and just releasing new characters and maps via DLC for a couple years. That way we can keep the roster from Ultimate with added content for the next console.
Sakurai has gotten enough good will and freedom to do whatever he wants before he takes on an advisory role for the next Smash, whenever that happens. Ultimate is going to be nearly impossible for them to top without stripping it down and they've got no reason to push this hard this soon for a new Smash. Mario Kart 8/Deluxe has been around for 10 years. That's the first new entry of a big flagship title we should expect from them and that combined with a new 3D Mario gives them more than enough time for Sakurai to come out with another game while a different team works on a Smash installment.
From Sakurai’s comments that I posted earlier it seems like he doesn’t want someone else to make Smash Bros. He said he doesn’t see anyone else making one. So if Nintendo wants one I don’t see Sakurai saying no. This will also be the longest gap between Smash titles since Melee. (Yeah yeah we had DLC but still) 64 to Melee: 2 years Melee to Brawl: 7 years Brawl to Wii U: 6 years Wii U to Ultimate: 4 years Ultimate to next: 6 years and counting
I just personally have no interest in a new Smash given how perfect Ultimate already is. Sakurai seems like he’d work on a new one out of obligation not passion which feels like a bummer. Him saying he doesn’t seem anyone ready to take the mantle from him is a bummer, because he wants someone to step up and be able to handle it, but it doesn’t seem they have anyone internally ready for it
