I know Nintendo is no better than any other corporation, but neither can I deny that this is based behavior.
Got Star Fox today and just had my first play through. I was in middle school when N64 came out and I would say my three most played N64 games were Mario 64, GoldenEye and Star Fox 64. Tonight, I played mostly the easy route on easy mode, but ended up playing the hard portion of Venom. Really like the graphics, music and faithfulness to the original. My one criticism is the voice acting, maybe my brain is too programmed to the voices in the original game. Looking forward to playing different routes and just in general this is one of those games for me that has a lot of re-playability.
Just finished my first run through, basically the shittiest path possible. Overall this rules and it’s a tragedy if we don’t finally get a proper sequel. things I love: -graphics are incredible -cutscenes are probably the best I’ve ever seen in a Nintendo game? -Falco and Peppy designs have really grown on me -this game has always controlled very well and is fun as hell and that holds up almost entirely. (“Time has passed this style of game by” is a take I’ve seen way too much of - no?) things I’m iffy on: -the pacing feels kinda off as a result of the cutscenes despite their quality. The levels feel a lot shorter when you’re not burning right through from one to another -still don’t really like how they changed Fox’s look -voice acting is a mixed bag. Falco is done really well, and Fox and Pepper are pretty good, but it’s hard not to immediately think of the original actors when Slippy, Peppy, and literally any of the bad guys speak -would really love to be able to remap the buttons Hope a future update gives some alternative control layouts and a play all levels back to back mode. Ripping through these is endlessly replayable and that’d the perfect way to do it once you’ve exhausted all the scenes
Great game. Glad it exists. Gonna nitpick a little bit though. Fox seemed much more grounded and serious in the original. I preferred that. Now he's got this Pete Venkman arrogance to him which is too similar to what Falco does, in my opinion. Fox only did all this shit to get a massive paycheck and to promote his brand. Such a sellout. Didn't feel like he gave a fuck about the Lylat system or seeking vengeance for his father's demise. Also, too many characters were stripped of personality by bland voice acting. Not sure what they did to my boy Bill. I liked his surfer voice from the original. And don't get me started on Wolf. Like, did they even try to make him interesting? Him and Leon were much cooler when they had that snobby butler sounding accent. Also, I need the train conductor boss to sound more like Foghorn Leghorn. I preferred how in the original the weak points of the bosses would light up when you did damage to them. Seems they did away with that. If I wasn't already familiar with how to defeat these bosses, I'd have no idea if I was inflicting damage upon them. I still hate the water level. I guess I can't fault them for sticking true to the original and keeping that level annoying.
I read that this is actually how he was in the original Japanese Star Fox 64 and his personality was changed in the English translation.
Agreed that Fox constantly asking General Pepper for more money was a little off for me lol I do like the retcon of Katt though
Listen, Fox's dad was irresponsible with money. He didn't get shot down on Venom, he escaped his obligations and left his son with the tab. He's probably sipping on some fruit drink on the beach planet right now!
I beat Venom 2. Had to switch it to easy to do it though. Hey I did the rest of the hard route on normal so it ain't too bad lol Got plenty of time i'll beat the true ending level on normal difficulty eventually. Now I am going and exploring other routes.
Took me playing this remake to realize the Titania Landmaster mission is the lone stage I never reached in the original. To unlock the path you have to do some very specific stuff in sector x. Going to try to reach that one for first time now. Update Titania done. Now have all stages unlocked in just 3 or 4 playthroughs. Time to dive into challenge mode. Again the only one I haven't beat on Normal yet is Venom 2.
I got my ass tore up sooo many times by that laser and tentacle boss right before Venom. And then by the Star Wolf team at Venom. And then by loose eyeball Andross. Then I crash into a wall trying to follow James. I don’t recall being dogshit at this game back in the day. I feel a bit washed. 13 year old me would have owned this shit.
Easy route Andross might be the easiest final boss fight of all time. Even though I guess technically it isn't really the final final boss.
I had never had star fox on the n64. I just beat andross and there’s that scene afterwards where he says “those fools think they’ve won”. Was that in the original game and was there an expectation of a second star fox because of it?
Was feeling high on myself like I already mastered the game then I played Corneria on expert for the first time and died. I wonder how much much of my normal playthrough was muscle memory from when I was a kid. Add different stuff and more enemies into the equation I am not as good. Also I like that they have online battle mode, but it's at that point still where most people playing it got too good too fast and it's impossible for someone getting a hang of Starfox multiplayer.
Yea I tried it last night and it seems potentially fun but I was instantly getting my ass kicked. Didn’t even feel possible to stay alive long enough to get good
