OOT is one the best games of all time and while I get the cynicism a lot of the time about Nintendo/the video game world in general we are talking about a game that’s never even been released in widescreen let alone HD/4K. The original doesn’t even run at movie frame rate lol. It needs a modern version more than almost anything else I can think of and a 15 year old port for a dead handheld doesn’t count. Cautiously optimistic about the art style and voice acting, was definitely hoping to see more today and find out if this is just a fresh coat of paint or if it’s going to be expanded/changed beyond just the graphics. Given that the voiceover referenced stuff that I don’t believe was the case in the original game, I think that’s a hint that this is going to be a bigger update than Starfox got.
I guess I also feel like this isn’t an egregious remake because there’s been like a million good Zeldas since OOT. It’s not like the Starfox remake where it’s been 30 years and they still haven’t really ever even attempted a proper sequel. Starfox 64 again is frustrating because they’ve basically only ever made the same game over and over again 4 times or games that barely scratch the itch of what made the original good. I want an actual Starfox 64 2 whereas with OOT they’ve made like 3 proper sequels and completely reinvented the series in addition to that. I don’t really feel like a remake here or there is coming at the cost of anything new.
Launch day, 1998. Crazy to think it was nearly 30 years ago. I was so mind blown that a game had the night and day mechanics and the drawbridge would open and close at the castle. Hyrule Field felt so huge. And I could just sit and fish at the pond for hours. Truly insane stuff for its time. lol
Yup! It isn't like Zelda has been stagnant for decades. TOTK was only three years ago lol They will probably use this time to cash in hype with the remake plus Zelda movie next year, and then eventually a new entry will come. I just don't understand the absolute disgust and hatred for doing this that I've seen online last 24 hours haha
Yeah, i'm convinced we'll get a Zelda specific direct later this year which includes a look at gameplay + the first trailer for the movie
The Star Fox demo is really good. Gameplay is top notch. The voice acting is a bit too serious or something and not as goofy and charming as the original, but it’s fine.
Getting the alt path in Meteo where you fly through the weird energy clouds was so hard on the original, I think I only successfully did it a couple times in 64. This remake demo I got the alt path literally first try. Maybe the controls are better or something I dunno, but it felt easier than the original.
I don't understand why people continue to want to make new entries/reboots more serious. That's absolutely not why I play these games.
I think 1999. I was in 5th grade. Maybe a year or so after it came out. Our copy was given to us by my dad's friend who already finished it actually. Similar with Star Fox 64. We got it in '99 from a second hand video game store.
I think I bought OoT from Walmart with my First Communion cash lol which I think is usually 2nd grade? Probably somewhere between 1999 and 2000. Had a blast with that game but never beat it. Shit was hard for a little kid, but I know I at least got to be adult Link.
Playing oot in 98 with the prima guide was elite gaming experience. the first number of times I played I rented it and only could play in 2 day spurts. Every time I rented it again, someone else would have erased and played over my save so I would start over. Was so pumped when I finally got it myself.
I wish I would have gotten into Zelda earlier. I didn't start playing Zelda until Twilight Princess in 2007 when I was in 10th grade. Been my favorite game franchise ever since.
My first Zelda game was actually Zelda 2. I have a soft spot for that one despite it being the most polarizing game of the series. However, I was very familiar with Zelda 1 because I'd be in stores playing the NES demo machine with the multiple games loaded in there. (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Punch Out, Kid Icarus, Kung Fu, etc...) Is anyone else old enough to remember these things? I still remember the red button you'd press at the kiosk to cycle through which game you wanted to play.
Had no idea Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was also announced for Switch 2 until this morning. Will definitely pick that up in Feb
I never played Ocarina, so I'm fine with/excited about the remake. The fact that this will expose a ton of new players while also providing an improved replay for others definitely justifies it. Now having said that, I think there’s also validity to the frustration. Not necessarily about remaking OoT in a vacuum, but the fact that Nintendo is positioning it as their big holiday game in the second year of the Switch 2. I also think the reception would've been better if the reveal was a genuine surprise, but instead we all knew about its existence courtesy of leaks.
Did you play any of the older games yet like the 2D ones? Every Zelda fan needs to play Link to the Past and Link's Awakening at least once in their lives. LTTP was technically the third Zelda game, but really the it's the first Zelda game that retrospectively feels like a true Zelda game. A lot of the classic gameplay and lore elements of the franchise came from that game.
I just can't get into the 2D games at all tbh. Honestly the only Zelda games I truly love are OoT, WW, BOTW, TOTK, and Echoes of Wisdom
