Mario Kart 9, Pokémon Legends Z-A, Metroid Prime 4, a possible 3D Mario… and whatever other major ports could get announced. This could be a huge launch. I think it’s very clear that launch game development has slowed the release of of this thing.
After the Wii U confusion there was no chance it would be called anything else especially when it’s basically the same console just upgraded.
in all seriousness, i'm not sure if i'm gonna upgrade unless the hardware is incredibly stellar/different enough and the game library is intriguing. Nintendo has spent the last 8 years selling TONS of copies of the original Switch. some of those consumers are gonna be excited that this will pack the power of a PS4 and that'll be enough to justify upgrading. but i'm not sure if more casual gamers (myself included) will see a need to upgrade something that already works well enough. even if the specs are a lot better than the first Switch, i want to know what makes this console worthy of being called the Switch 2. every major console upgrade Nintendo has gone through has been unique enough to warrant being considered next gen, and in my mind, this feels incredibly similar to the first Switch but with upgraded hardware, graphics, and an expanded software library. i know they're just iterating on the original formula, but what makes the Switch 2 the Switch 2 and not just an upgraded Switch (the same way the OLED model was an upgrade on the OG)?
For starters: the switch 2 exclusive games. Unless you upgrade you’ll either have to a) wait until you can emulate or B) watch people on YouTube play the games instead
We also live in a culture of latest and greatest so that, and factoring in brand loyalty, they are already going to sell tons of these things. We are talking about the same company that successfully gets families to buy more than one console per household.
This exactly. I miss Nintendo that would just swing for the fences and put out something wild. This is so safe and boring. I'm sure they have some weird things up their sleeve, but I really hope the UI isn't as stale as the Switch's was. Would LOVE a feature like StreetPass again but we are never getting that back.
i mean i understand it's gonna have exclusive titles (which is why i said i'm gonna have to see what the software library looks like), but that happens with every new console release too, and save for maybe the Wii to Wii U upgrade (and even then i can see some valid reasons why people upgraded despite Nintendo's shitty marketing strategy), every new console release of theirs has seemed to make a case for itself beyond "this is a new piece of hardware with some exclusive software". i get that that older software will look better on the Switch 2, but i also don't think developers (Nintendo included, save for select titles) are gonna exclusively develop for the Switch 2 for quite a while (especially since Nintendo sold so many copies of the first Switch). if that's the case, most of their games will probably be better-optimized for the OG Switch and have slight upgrades on the Switch 2, so why would i buy the successor right now if those games are gonna play fine on the OG Switch? i know it's 8 year old hardware, but i guess i was looking for something incredibly groundbreaking/different for its successor, and until we get more details on how it'll function, i can only be cautiously optimistic. i might still upgrade, don't get me wrong, but this announcement doesn't feel as exciting as i thought it'd be.
Y’all are assuming there isn’t a Nintendo gimmick involved but we haven’t seen mouse mode yet and it was teased in that video.
that video did not get me excited at all TBH - not sure what marketing was thinking there. it makes it seem like almost the exact same console, and featuring Mario Kart gameplay that we've seen a million times over doesn't help
mouse mode is definitely a gimmick, but not really a console-defining feature. maybe some games will make good use of it, but i don't see it being the norm.
this 100%. re: MK, it definitely looked like a completely new track with a different speed ramp style, so unless it's more DLC for MK8, i'm gonna assume it's 9. still doesn't help that it looked so similar to MK8. if they're wanting to justify it as a worthy successor by showing off how powerful it is, maybe show off a game that takes full-advantage of the hardware like MP4 or even an upgraded BOTW.
i get that, but a reveal trailer should make the initial case that a new piece of hardware should be considered worth buying or standing on its own. what the reveal trailer for the first Switch had going for it was the console's hybrid nature, showing how games like Mario Kart, Zelda, 3D Mario, and the like could be played at home and on the go on the same device. the Switch 2's defining feature seems to be that it's a larger, more powerful Switch. this trailer clearly showed off how it looks different, but unless you look closely enough, i don't think them showing off new Mario Kart footage in a reveal trailer is enough to sell people on the idea that it's more powerful. i get why they chose it since MK8 is the best-selling Switch game, so obviously MK9 would sell well on the Switch 2. but it doesn't really scream "next-gen" the way games like MP4 would.
ok this would definitely get me to upgrade, lol. i have fond memories of playing this in my church's youth center as a child.
I mean mouse would practically allow all touch screen or cursor games to be optimized and played so it would be cool to get some new ports of 3DS and DS games but I don't really see that happening a lot. It would also make Mario Maker way easier.
It's just that every time since after the Super Nintendo they've released something new and interesting looking in some way, the only real exception being the DS to the 3DS except that added 3D, new buttons, completely new UI, etc. I was just hoping for more of Nintendo-like leap. It doesn't even look like a Nintendo device and that's what bums me out.
Essentially, yes. Edit: I mean, I'm sure it's more powerful otherwise they literally would be burned at the stakes by their audience haha
