Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers

Nintendo's upcoming NX will be a portable, handheld console with detachable controllers, a number of sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal - but here's the twist: we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.

Then, when you get home, the system can connect to your TV for gaming on the big screen.

A base unit, or dock station, is used to connect the brain of the NX - within the controller - to display on your TV.

NX will use game cartridges as its choice of physical media, multiple sources have also told us.

Considering NX's basis as a handheld first and foremost, the choice may not come as too much of a surprise - although we have heard the suggestion Nintendo recommends a 32GB cartridge

Nvidia is providing the core technology that powers Nintendo's next generation NX console. Multiple sources have confirmed that the new machine is based around Nvidia's mobile-orientated Tegra processor, with development kits currently using the Tegra X1 chip found in the Shield Android TV console and the Google Pixel C tablet.

At a really basic level, NX is effectively a reversal of the Wii U GamePad concept. It's a fully integrated mobile games machine you can plug into an HDTV, as opposed to a console with a semi-portable gaming component, bolstered with a unique 'go anywhere' take on local multiplayer.

And the compromise there is clear - a relatively lower level of performance compared to the existing current-gen machines. Nvidia's Tegra technology is built with a specific profile in mind: a delicate balance between performance and power efficiency in order to maintain battery life, the life force of mobile gaming. What this means is that prior, plausible rumours of an AMD-powered console with PS4-beating performance and utilising x86 architecture are erroneous. NX is smaller, leaner, portable - and yes, less powerful.

Finally, we've heard from one source that NX planning has recently moved up a gear within Nintendo ahead of the console's unveiling, which is currently slated for September.

After the confused PR fiasco of the Wii U launch, the company is already settling on a simple marketing message for NX - of being able to take your games with you on the go

Love this concept and I'm thinking it completely sold me on an NX. I love my DS and really wanted to see Nintendo stick with handhelds and this seems like a logical progression.

Interested in seeing the size of the handheld portion/how mobile it is

I would have preferred that the unit simply hooks up to a TV through an HDMI cable the way you can a laptop. That would have really been exciting, especially for people who travel a lot.

Sounds accurate. Definitely an interesting idea. I wonder if NX games will be released on Wii U as well since it's probably going to be pretty similar in terms of power.

Assuming this is all accurate, pretty smart way to simultaneously replace both the WiiU and 3DS and basically unify under one console.

this being portable would also explain why they're switching over to cartridges

Worried about 3rd party support for NX but fingers crossed.

In other news, enjoying splatoon so far and mario world.

I did a trial run of Xenoblade just to get a gauge of how the game is and what type of mood I am to be in, and I just found out how incredibly large the world is. It's insane. But might also be inversely proportional to the font size of the damn game.

What is this? A game for ants?!

Haha yeah. I loved 3D Land and had shitloads of fun but it was too easy. Took me roughly 15 hours to finish everything.

This strikes a good balance. Nintendo makes the best level designs.

3D World was great and it is a shame a lot of people wrote it off the way they do the 2D games.

I beat the game but did not feel like getting all of the stars for the secret levels. They can be too stressful.

    I should replay 3D World, I don't think I ever finished it.

You should! Can't wait to play it this weekend.

Anyone here familiar with the style savvy series? I played the demo on the 3DS and it was fun. I am not good with fashion at all but the little I've played from it is pretty good.

It always bugs me how long it takes Nintendo to drop prices on games.

Skyward Sword is five years old now and still goes for 40-50 dollars. It is another reason they have trouble competing.

World 6-2 in Mario World. This game is so good. Even my SO who is a sony fangirl can't get over how good the levels are, and how polished the game is.

Also highly recommend Affordable Space Adventures. It's a sidescroller exploration game wherein everyone navigates the same one spacecraft and the controls are divided depending on the number of players. For 2 players one handles the piloting (steering, flare guns, scanning) and the other is an engineer (contols the flashlight, and basically the ship's systems - for example making the ship different levels of heavy to submerge underwater or reducing thrusters to decrease heat/speed so enemies would not be alerted).

It's ridiculously fun and really needs coordination. I love it. definitely got my money's worth on the Wii U

That would be great, but I will still have to get a PS4 eventually for 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
