Okay, so I'm only going to suggest games that are either Wii U exclusives or make the best use of the Wii U hardware.

Super Mario Maker
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (must like strange JRPGs, but it's a gorgeous game and lots of fun, may never be ported)
NES Remix 1 & 2
Pushmo World
Nintendo Land
Super Mario 3D World
Pikmin 3
The Wonderful 101 (also might not be ported, but incredibly fun and creative)
Zombi U (not an incredible game and I know you didn't mention horrors, but this game was made with the Wii U tablet in mind and is a lot of fun with mechanics based around that)

Thank you for this list. I’m going to see how much I can get some of these on eBay - including Zombie U. I’m open minded about most games.

 

Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Xenoblade Chronicles X are two amazing JRPGs that are increasingly likely to remain WiiU exclusives

 

Also ZombiU is actually really awesome. It’s multiplatform now but the WiiU version is still the definitive version.

 

By the way, I’ve mentioned before that I’m playing ”Torna: The Golden Country”, the standalone DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I have since found out that you can even buy and play it without owning XC2. It also works in terms of story because it is a self-contained, distant past prequel. What it therefore essentially is is a beautiful, very well made, fast paced AND CHEAP 20 hour JRPG. I recommend it to anyone that finds regular Xenoblade too daunting.

I wouldn't play Mario Maker on WiiU at this point, just wait for 2 if you have a Switch. Same for Splatoon.

 

I played a lot of Zombie U local multiplayer lol. One player spawning the zombies on the game pad and one player trying to shoot them down was REALLY fun.

 

Nah, play Super Mario Maker at least. It has the benefit of being able to create levels and do on the fly edits with the touchpad which you won't be able to do as quickly and precisely on Switch. And the game used is cheaper than the sequel will be new on Switch so he can see if he likes it. If he doesn't he can return it within 7 days at GameStop for a full refund.

 

I still don't know if I would enjoy Mario maker, I don't think I have any desire for level design. That's all the game is right? Designing levels and playing other peoples levels? I get the appeal for some. Just dont think its for me.
