I don't even understand the reference. I just find reaction gifs and save them to my phone.

I used to enjoy dungeons in the Zelda games. Then I played BoTW and didn't give 2 shits that there were no dungeons.

    Game was amazing without them.

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

The beasts were one of the worst parts about BOTW for me. They were just..there.

The beasts were a cool idea and I liked them for what they were but they in no way were “better” than OG Zelda dungeons and the game itself wasn’t “better” for not having them, it was just different. Nintendo has shown that they can have classic dungeons while also not restricting players’ freedom or choices (Link Between Worlds) so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they figure out a way in the future to marry the two approaches into something greater.

Not too sure what you mean by they were just there?

My feeling is you had to go out to seek them, get inside, solve the interior, defeat a boss. I spaced them out in my play through so each one was given proper attention.

The thing is that I can get someone being upset with me for just saying small, one word answers or gifs in response, but I hardly consider that shitting on someone's opinion especially when other people have clearly stated some strong, choice opinions against dungeons (I really do love dungeons when done well) and other things, but it is what it is.

I see why dungeons can be so polarizing. When done wrong like in Phantom Hourglass they can be some of the worst things with the backtracking nonsense. And with the franchise having so many entries under its belt, I know why people like the change in structure in the game, but for me, I played Zelda because those staples of the franchise are what I liked most and were part of its identity to me. I also think they easily could have done more dungeon-like things in BOTW without making it feel linear.

I think, but not sure, that they meant they felt like they were just add-ons? Like tacked on things you didn't really have to care about. Which isn't totally incorrect considering they are completely optional.

I wanna agree that BOTW didnt need dungeons but "dungeons suck" is a really bad take and I'm upset

i was fine with there only being beasts because while there weren’t any traditional dungeons, there was just as much if not more exploration. the biggest thing i can think of is that dungeons would make more sense in BotW than in any LoZ since the original because Hyrule is in such ruin you would think there would be caves and hideouts and stuff everywhere from whoever is left fleeing Hyrule

I didn't like the beasts that much either for what it's worth, could have done without them frankly. I just like them more than I would a classic dungeon because they were more physics based and required less time.

BotW would’ve been even better if, in addition to the Divine Beasts, there were also like four traditional dungeons that you could raid and come out with some tool or item that would help in the assault on the castle. And of course they would have been optional, just like everything else in the game. Dungeons are a core part of the series, the answer is definitely not dispensing with them entirely.

I have heard that before I think. Seems like a fairly good idea to me.

I mean, except for the plateau sequence, basically everything is optional, yet often meaningfull. That is part of the genius. Designing a game for it to work and feel right with all of the (often significantly gameplay altering) rewards gained from activities that are essentially optional, but also work and feel right in its own right without them, is wild. If the beasts, or even classical dungeons for that matter, wouldn't have been optional but rather hard walls, it wouldn't have been right for this game.

Yeah exactly. Would've been cool if they added some caves/hideouts inside of all the goddamn mountains we had to climb over lol

I agree and disagree. I think they were better in the context of BotW. However, whether or not BotW is then better than say Wind Waker or OoT is a matter of taste.

Link Between Worlds is certainly interesting in this context. I do however think it has a different kind of freedom than BotW. By the way, I honestly always thought that the Zelda dungeons as a concept are a lot more suited to and fun in 2D Zelda games.

Nintendo had been able to do so many incredible things over the years with 3D dungeons in terms of both mechanics and aesthetics. Relegating dungeons to the top-down style games only would be a mistake.

I found the beasts in no way meaningful. Nor did I find any of the shrines after my 50th meaningful. There was a heavy amount of diminishing returns in BOTW for me. The beasts were just hollow and vapid, jammed together shrines with bosses that were way too easily cheesed.

That being said, I am aware that the old bosses were just "use dungeon item and win" type bosses, but they were at least more varied and interesting. One of the bosses from OoT is literally a giant game of whack-a-mole but with a fire dragon. That's just cool.

I just wish that going forward, they find some way to merge the two designs because you can totally have themed dungeons and not have the dungeon items. The forest temple was so cool because of the twisting rooms and in Majora's Mask they had that incredibly cool stone temple.

Also like let’s be honest, the Beasts were just shorter, less visually interesting dungeons. At their core they weren’t that different. Again, cool idea and fit that game well, but that should not be the standard going forward.

    1. Meaningful as in the rewards/skills you gained.
    3. The diminishing returns were kind of the point, I think. You either only do a few (or no) shrines because you don't need them, or you do as many as you feel like you need to do to get enough stamina/hearts (which doesn't take too many for a decent amount of hearts/stamina), or you do more than that because you enjoy doing them, at which point the rewards become less important. Whether or not that works for you is a different story of course, but it worked for me.

Well, yeah, unless you don't actually happen to like the things they did, which is really all I said. I only said "dungeons suck" later on, specifically as a jokey response to one member.
