I was out of the gaming world for about 5 years as well. The absolute best thing about the Switch IMO is it seems to be releasing all the best indie games of the past few years that I had never even heard of, and they are 20 dollars tops!

I'm lucky enough to be getting one as a present, so I won't feel as guilty/broke for buying a handful of games over the next couple months, too! I'm also thinking I'll get the pro controller, but we'll see if I feel like I need it.

if you plan on playing a lot on your TV I cannot recommend the pro controller enough. everyone's different but I didn't think I would need it and when I finally picked it up I immediately regretted not getting it from the get go. it's a great controller, not just for Switch but in general.

Definitely recommend the pro controller. I don’t play ps4 or xbox one much, but when I do I think man why can’t these controllers feel like the switch pro controller

Also, just picked up let’s go. The plan is to see if he gets into it. My fear is he’s never gonna let me play

If you want more Mario other than Odyssey and Mario Kart/Party etc, Mario + Rabbids is super underrated (or at least I don't personally know anyone else who owns it) and I believe it will be on sale during Black Friday (I forget where)

The switch pro controller is probably the best controller ever. No lie.

ive had fun with lets go so far, getting rid of random encounters was such a great idea. places like mt moon are actually a joy to go through now without having to deal with a zubat every 5 steps. pokemon following you is really neat, i love how hard my oddish tries to keep up with me.

i still have my issues with it though, i dont mind the switch to go mechanics for catching mons, but they could have still included the possibility of fighting wild mons. also very indicative of gf's lack of ambition that this is the third time they remake gen 1 and its still very much the same game with a new coat of paint. i dont mind them doing gen 1 again but this was an opportunity to expand on it, yet gf seems allergic to new content on remakes which begs the question "why is it even necessary then?".

also the new look is nice in the overworld with the town looking livelier and mons inhabiting the actual world, it makes it looked lived in. but the models still look really stiff and it becomes specialluy egregious in battles. the move from sprites to 3d already took some personality away from the models for the mons, having them be so static in battle only compounds the problem. like how does a 10+ year old game like battle revolution look significantly better than this? the pokeon actually have personality in their models. now that i think about it, what is genius sonority up to? why isnt gf getting more use out of them?

I like saying 'pokes' more than 'mons'

The plural of pokemon is pokemon, so it would be mon, not mons *pushes up glasses*

If you don’t want Zubatzs use repel. Taking away random encounters completely would break a lot of systems in the main games I think. Not saying it’s bad they did it here. I do think they should implement a random encounter toggle in the core games so you can explore unhindered, like in Bravely Default etc.

but then you lose more than just Zubats, far from a perfect solution. what systems do you think it would break? genuinely curious as a more casual player.

but repel takes away all encounters. yeah it works if youre trying to go through something uninterrupted but having ecounters be in the overworld fixes that while still giving you the option of encounters, how is that not an improvement over "just use repel"? i also cant think of any mechanics that it gets rid of considering the overworld spawns are still random. it also makes the world much more vibrant. frankly i think its kind of a necessary step if youre trying to makes the move to home console (yeah yeah i know the switch is handheld too but you know what i mean) worthwhile. i really think all it needs is to make it so encounters also include battling and not just catching go mechanics.

System is maybe the wrong word. But here: 1. A region that doesn’t just have one gen of Pokemon would feel, uh, too crowded I guess? 2. The hunting down Pokemon (which can require keeping track of several factors) to catch is a big part of the post game that would arguably be trivialized with the removal of random, “invisible” encounters. Also random encounters are just a JRPG tradition many are fond of. I see how a lot of that doesn’t apply to everyone though. I do think the most reasonable solution then would be a toggle.

Apart from what I wrote above I think the little models running around looks kind of lame (aside from those that have been integrated into the world in a few games, but not as regular encounters). However, they sometimes had this system where you could see something move “under the grass” so to say. I think they could find a middle way between those?

it def is mostly personal preference. the only thing i can think of overworld encounters affecting is something like hoard encounters if they were to return. i think there are lots of ways to improve it, though - i think it would be cool if more predatory Pokémon would hide/sneak up on you/charge you, meeker Pokémon would run and you’d chase them a bit, just general little immersive things to make it feel like an ecosystem with a food chain. areas like darker caves could have wild Pokémon more obscured/blurry, and they become clearer as you approach. i love it as a start, though.

like how Sun/Moon would have bird types encounter you if you stepped under their shadow as they flew overhead. i want a grander version of that.

I think my main gripe is that a lot of those changes streamline a Pokemon game to a point where the post game is trivialized compared to what the series’ post game is known and loved for, in an effort to streamline a campaign that never was hard or particularly long to begin with (for any age group). That is if they let all this bleed into the main games.

Right, that’s awesome, but the dorky little models I see jumping around in caves in Let’s Go don’t do it for me lol

Also in general I’m not a huge fan of the continuing chibification that has been happening since they moved away from pixel art
