I still love a lot of those Sonic games and Sonic Adventure was huge for me as a kid

 

Sonic Adventure (especially 2) was enjoyable and not because it was Sonic. Chaos Garden was good and that has nothing to do with traditional Sonic gameplay or anything. You could remove Sonic completely from that game and replace him and his friends with any generic characters and that game would be exactly the same.

I kind of understand what you’re saying but if you think about it that applies to a lot of games including many Nintendo classics. I do however think the characters of Sonic themselves add value to a game (not to me personally though), otherwise thoee characters wouldn’t have been this popular for this long.

 

I only play Sonic for one reason.

 

I love Black Jeopardy.

 

Finished Mega Man 11 and episode 1 of Captain Toad. Most progress I’ve made in a video game since I beat BoTW whenever that was

 

i’m totally gonna rebuy Captain Toad even after 100%ing on Wii U, such a great game.

also i’m about halfway through my first play through of Odyssey and it’s fuckin’ sweet release to finally get my hands on it. my only gripe is the Sand Kingdom was a terrible choice to open with, way too barren/expansive for my taste. enjoying the more concise kingdoms like Lake Kingdom and the one where the vulture stole Cappy way more.

 

SMO has some odd things in my opinion

 

it does, a lot of it doesn’t feel like Mario level design, but it’s not necessarily worse. just not what i would have expected. Mario Galaxy 2 will prob always be my fav Mario but i can see this being comfortably in my top five.

 

First of all SMO was amazing. Opinions are opinions but like it was objectively near perfectly designed and executed.

I think they opened with the Sand Kingdom specifically because they wanted to showcase that this isn’t another Galaxy, but a game more like 64 and Sunshine, like they said when promoting it. I personally like those over the Galaxy games but all of them are incredible.

 

it is amazing so far. Sand Kingdom is just the least interesting to me at this point. having an absolute blast with it.

 

The city is my favorite because of that one moment (it you haven’t got to it, you’ll know once you do)

yeah that’s where i left off and it was incredible. i had read that the festival was the peak of the game but resisted the urge to dig beyond that and i’m very glad i didn’t YouTube it.

 

I don't think, and never said, SMO is a bad game. I just think they made some strange choices. I don't understand the point of having clone button inputs (x & y then a & b being duplicates) when there are so many moves linked to motion controls that they easily could have assigned to those buttons to make things easier for people playing in handheld mode. I also agree that the Sand Kingdom is very boring, but I mean, it serves its purpose and you're out of their pretty quickly.

I also super hate how they handled the darker side of the moon. Not because I don't like a challenge, but because the game is one of the easiest games I've ever experienced and then for the last bonus level they spiked it up so high. It's just jarring to me.

So I have a few quibbles with the game, but nothing that is greatly impactful to most people I'd assume. Solid game, but far from my favorite Mario.

 

Odyssey is my second favorite. Sunshine forever

Your name isn’t Shrek on Switch, right? Lol. I saw someone playing SMO on my friend’s list, guessing it was you.

There are a lot of “holy shit did they just do that” moments in the game, and lots of clever puzzles and throwbacks that honestly made me teary-eyed haha. I’m not a fan of collectibles though, so I’m not sure if I’ll ever try and get all the moons. i think last I checked I was somewhere around 600.
