The controller thing doesn't really bother me. It's just made me realize that I need to buy another pair for when I have game nights.

I think you mean listening to fan and community feedback haha

They just doubled down on the whole mobile app thing in an interview and the author of this article hits the nail on the head. Doing things differently is fine, but when you completely ignore fan and community critisims it's just incredibly frustrating.

Nintendo boss says you need a mobile device to chat on Switch because the company 'does things differently'

Im so happy I lost interest in Mario party during the Gamecube era, for people that swear by that game series Ive heard that Ive left at the peak of the game being good. Sorry that yall are super let down by this latest iteration

I‘m not saying the mobile app is good (though there are some solid arguments against the necessity of integrated voice chat, such as usage rates, the fact that people been using other apps etc.), but I firmly believe that numbers speak louder than the vocal minority. The Switch is a huge success, primarily because, much like other big Nintendo success stories, it’s a video game system that focusee on consumers that don’t give shit about the things that certain (relatively small, hence the low usage rates for voice chat on other platforms) subgroups of core games care about. The app then isn’t a poor attempt at implementing voice chat as much as it is the bare minimum to at least somewhat appease customers they don’t actually primarily target in the first place.

I loved Mario Party on the Wii (I think it was 8?) but I have a feeling it wouldn’t hold up since I was a child

But their whole reasoning from what they've told is that they had the mobile app because they want it to be as convenient as possible for the player to use because it's something they always have on them while playing. However, that's flawed logic because it isn't true and the one thing you always have on you while playing your Switch is the console itself. Also, there are games like Fortnite that allow you to directly plug into the system to use voice chat. Also, one of of the primary reasons people use other apps is solely because they don't like the mobile app and want integrated support for community features on the console.

What I'm saying is that Nintendo is constantly sending mixed messages and pulling itself in too many directions. They are a jack of all trades, but a master of none and that's frustrating. This isn't just about the mobile app and I'm sorry if I made it seem that way as it was just an example. They don't have Netflix or YouTube despite a large (yes, large) amount of people who want it, they don't have anyway for you to backup your system except for cloud saves which doesn't even work for all games and you have to pay for in order to use, they changed their mind on Virtual Console and now made it so anyone who purchased those games across multiple systems in the past have to pay for them yet again under a new program which doesn't even allow the consumer to chose which game they want or keep them. These are just a few things that the community has been very, very vocal about.

I know there's a response that would be along the lines of "well, that's not the audience they care about, it's the kids or the parents that don't deal with that kind of stuff" and that's not a good answer. You shouldn't let someone do a shit job just because it's inconsequential for some. They're also going out of their way this time with marketing to add a wider appeal than previous consoles. They have esports and are tracking for more hardcore players. They simply want to be different because they think it's their whole identity.

Also please don't think I'm trying to be harsh with my response or anything. I'm simply stating how I feel and what I feel and none of my frustations are with you, they're with Nintendo. In fact, I actually appreciate that there's someone I can have a conversation like this with because sometimes it allows me to see things from a different view point and make me see things in a way I wouldn't have thought about otherwise.

Arguably being different is a big part of identity and more often than not it has served them well overall. They don’t do this because they think they have a quirky image to maintain however. It’s a lot deeper than that. Basically what it comes down to is this: Nintendo is a very old Japanese company and as such they think very, very long-term. Nintendo literally makes 100 year plans. The Switch, or the WiiU, or even the Wii, is a blimp on a radar for such companies. Within the framework of this long-term orientation, Nintendo has very different ideas about where the market/industry will go and/or should go, and everything they do is guided by that idea. Given that, when they embrace something halfheartedly (this applies especially to the details of these things), it is because they don’t think it fits their long term vision for themselves, the industry or, most likely, both. Sometimes they are wrong, sometimes they turn out to be right. In many cases, time will still have to tell. You either roll with it or you don’t. They have always been this way, so you shouldn’t be surprised. On top of that, they’re also financially conservative, which makes them careful in some regards, though not in broad lines.

As far as the excuses and the double talk go: more often than not those come from Nintendo America which feels like it has to engage with the vocal minority, which points towards the still existing cultural differences between core Nintendo and its Western arms (common in Japanse multinationals).

It’s all good btw, no hard feelings.

Yeah, I understand they have reasons for it, but I don't like it haha. I mean, catering to multiple audiences is hard enough, but then add in the fact that you have two very different cultures as well that make up a majority of your consumers, i.e. America and Japan, I can't imagine it's an easy balancing act.

It's just disheartening. It always feels like one step forward then two steps sideways, three steps back and one step diagonally with Nintendo. I wish for certain things they fell more in line with the likes of Sony and Microsoft. Also, not being able to backup your console at all unless you pay for cloud saves that don't even work for all games is a shit business model and that doesn't matter what company you are haha.

Speaking of Nintendo. As much as I am super frustrated you can't play in handheld mode or with the Pro Controller, (legitimately the only two ways I play the console) I still bought Super Mario Party because I love that franchise when it's done well. I adore party games. Having that and Jackbox on my console makes me pretty happy.

I could justify or rather explain part of that cloud saves thing if you’re interested lol but if so, then later

I'm curious if it's to field how much actual interest is in it and to see how well they can handle the saves/servers, etc. Still, you shouldn't force people to pay for backing up your owned content. Every device ever, from phones to tablets, computers to PlayStation, they all allow you to at least back up using an external hard drive or something.

Excited for Mario party. It’s best played with friends anyways so the only joy cons thing doesn’t bother me at all. Plus it’s really not like you need a full controller to press the two buttons required to roll a dice and play some mini games. It’s fine.

I’ve always perceived “the Switch promise” to be that you can play at home on your TV and on the go (handheld and/OR tabletop). That still applies to Mario Party.

As far as the controls go, I don’t think, given what the Switch is, that it’s unreasonable to make the occasional game that doesn’t support all the possible control options. Some games really aren’t designed to and it shouldn’t be shoehorned in.

My friend who owns an N64 regularly has people over to play Mario Party 2 & 3, so I'm just excited to have an updated version because I don't think I've really played any of the others that have come out.

Started playing Mario Party last night (alone) and it's rather enjoyable. I haven't played since N64 though so it's a little bit of a learning curve now.

Haha I did, and won the first game I played. Definitely having connectivity issues w my joycons - that was the only downside. Great to be back in to a mario party game.

Annoying how that is the case. I had some items on the tv stand in front of my switch, so i am hoping maybe that’s what caused the issue. Either way, I plan to buy a new set because when I did my case replacement I didn’t fully connect the L bumper button like an idiot.
